1) A study compared 3 methods of measuring deforestation by Tsimane households in Bolivia: direct measurement of plots by researchers, estimates by household heads, and estimates by plot owners.
2) Direct measurement found households cleared a total of 15.36 hectares across 36 plots, with roughly equal clearing of old growth and fallow forests. Plot owners' estimates highly correlated with direct measurements.
3) Household heads significantly underestimated total household clearing. Underestimation increased with actual area cleared, suggesting heads forgot plots cleared by others. Plot owners provided more accurate self-reports of deforestation than household heads.
