Task11

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?

The genre of the magazine I have chosen is classical/Piano pop. This is because I had an aim to fulfil,
which was to change the age range of the consumer of these types of magazines. I have done my
research and found out that much more elderly people are buying these types of magazines and
rather less the younger generation. I would like to get more teenagers to buy this magazine. Me,
myself as a teenager would not necessarily buy a Classical magazine because there aren’t many
content that I can relate to. However, the magazine I have created shall allow more or less for
everyone. On my front cover I decided to use a female model, ethnicity of British-Asian. I knew that
the front cover of the magazine must be well attractive to catch the audience’s eye. The model had
to be dressed and suited appropriately to make sure the content is general. She wore a white top
with stripes and a dark cardigan on top this is because I wanted her to represent a young teenage
talent, rather than an elderly person. The shot of the front cover was a mid shot, and the model was
facing eye contacted at the audience. This makes it seem as if the model is talking directly at you. On
the whole my magazine uses a colour scheme of white, grey and red. I knew that each colour had to
have a purpose on the audience. My magazine’s structure is similar to the BBC music magazine, and I
decided to have my house style like their one. They also have the same content, but mines focus
much more on young artists such as Birdy.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The audience feedback I received told me that my social groups are of ages 16 and above. The
majority buyer of this genre is men/women ages 24 and above. Many of the upper class and British.
However this magazine will aim more for the younger generation 16 and above. By having known
names from other artists will show dedication for the younger buyers. The model I decided to go
with is young British-Asian. Although Classical music is much associated with high class English
ethnicity, I wanted to use a different race as because there aren’t many Asian classical musicians.
Classical music was reinforced in the 19th century and evolved ever since as an important element of
British and Irish culture and to be placed on a more organised basis that could match some of the
developments seen in continental Europe. Music in this period has been seen as dominated by
continental trends and composers. The price of a standard classical is around £5.00 or more. I
decided to keep my price £2.99 as I know that the audience are teenagers meaning aren’t so
independent yet, so it will need to be purchasable for them.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The publisher of my magazine is going to be Rhinegold. As they have published other magazines
associated around this genre. The publisher’s use of house style, Front cover, content and dps looks
like what my magazine can relate to that is why I decided to go with them. My magazine will have
cross media such social networking sites like facebook or twitter. This will allow fans to stay up-to-
date on what’s new in the industry rather than waiting a week for the next issue.
Who would be the audience for your media product?

The gender of my magazine will be both, as it already is. The age range will be 16 and above. The
social group this magazine will be dedicated to will be of all kind from working class to the upper
class, this magazine will be inclusive and not excluding anyone. The interest these people should
have is listening to this type of music, and a great life although life is hard. This magazine will use
cross media to promote the magazine.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I attract my audience in many ways to this magazine I produced. The first way is the colour I used
had an impact on the audience to purchase this magazine. The model also had an impact as there
aren’t many asian classical musician, now that there are more people will want to read this
magazine.

“Your front cover looks at a very professional level
You have followed one colour scheme which is great (red, black and white)
You have added many cover lines which would attract your readers
Your masthead fits good over the model
The model represents young asians who are into classical music”

I used appropriate language to address my audience by keeping it formal and standard for readers to
understand, I also simplified the words that were being used, as I have aimed my audience from the
age 16 and so that they don’t get too carried away not understanding what is going on.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

From the start of the premium task till now I have seen my improvement on using technologies
such as InDesign, photoshop and prezzi. At the beginning I wasn’t so good at using them but now I’ve
learnt a lot. Photoshop helped me edit pictures with all sorts of tools. I’ve learnt how to remove
backgrounds from certain pictures and place an image onto another background.

InDesign helped me create a magazine fully, as it also has amazing tools. The ruler helped me place
thing at the appropriate places to make it look efficient.

I also used technologies such alike Blogger to keep my progression up-to-date on how my magazine
is developing.
