Welcome!
today’s goals:
● Introduce folks to MEEP as a set of
methods for learning & teaching.
● Create a space for community
education.
● Be real & responsive to the energy &
people in the room.
MEEP, MEEP!
The Mapping Educational Ecosystems Project (MEEP) aims to
help solve one of today’s biggest challenges — how to build
learning institutions that work for people at all stages of life,
from birth until natural death.
What’s an Educational Ecosystem?
people, relationships, & places that promote holistic learning.
1. people = students, families, teachers, administrators,
technologists, etc.
2. relationships = between schools, companies, community
organizations, and government initiatives.
3. places = library, the protest, and the smartphone.
Education is everywhere. We need to see where it happens.
And where it doesn’t. Together, we can change the systems.
Mining the Methods
MEEP mines the methods of learning & teaching. We make
them ours!
Location. Human Diversity. Technology.
Location
How does this co-working site called Parisoma differ from other learning
sites like a public library, a traditional classroom, or a street protest?
Human Diversity
What does learning mean given our amazing diversity?
● cultural identity such as age, race, class, language, etc.
● personal learning styles
● accessibility
Technology, Research, Neuroscience
1. How can we design better learning
experiences for all people, ourselves
included?
2. How do humans transform information
into knowledge?
3. What do we know about bodies and the
human brain?
MEEP ventures
MEEP is about methods. It has many ventures. We consider
them adventures in educational transformation.
Mind the App
A series of playshops that explore how educators are using
digital technologies to learn & teach.
C.Lit Labs.
The ABC’s of sex, gender, & sexuality! C.lit stands for critical
literacy, or all the ways we read the world, including
interpreting voice, accent, fashion, gender, skin tone,
hairstyle, etc.
Community Learning Labs
Free and open labs aimed at sensing the present in education
and mapping education’s future.
Conocimiento
“Conocimiento comes from opening all your senses,
consciously inhabiting your body and decoding its
symptoms - that persistent scalp itch, not caused by lice
or dry skin may be a thought trying to snare your
attention.”
b i g u p s t o – Gloria Anzaldúa.

of E3 for sharing
this method!
Conocimiento: A Method for Sharing
Spanish for personal knowledge, conocimiento involves
people forming learning circles to build personal
connections & share knowledge on more equal terms.
Goals:
● Meet some of the many people in the room.
● Ground ourselves in our bodies & community.
● Explore some of the themes of today’s presenters.
Conocimiento: A Method for Sharing
1. Form two concentric circles of equal number. Find a
partner in the other circle. Choose a first responder. If
you prefer, step aside and witness the exchanges.
2. First responder listens to the question, reflects, and
shares for 1 minute. Silence is a form of communication.
3. Switch! Same question, second thinker.
4. Migrate! Move two steps to meet a new person and
share ideas on a new question.
5. Closure! Feel your body, look around the room, and
experience the energy that emerges from sharing
knowledge in community.
Speed-Smarting
Like speed-dating, only nerdier.
Goals:
● Meet some of the many people in the room.
● Ground ourselves in our bodies, needs, & dreams.
● Explore some of the themes of today’s presenters by
focusing on natural solutions and concrete strategies.
Speed-Smarting
Much like conocimiento, speed-smarting is about sharing
knowledge in community. The difference is that speed-smarting
aims to find personal strategies & solutions that
better our shared planet.
Speed-Smarting: Problem-Solver Teams
1. Form two concentric circles of equal number. Find a
partner in the other circle. Choose a first responder.
2. Listen to the question, reflect, and share for 1 minute.
3. Switch! Same question, second thinker.
4. Problem-Solve! As a pair, discuss what this issue means
to you personally and what steps you can take to make
real social change.
5. Closure! Look around the room and feel the energy that
emerges from sharing knowledge in community.
And now...
Speed-smarting promotes design
thinking on teams. You can follow it
by asking pairs to form larger groups
and share from there.
Both methods build energy, curiosity,
and excitement; you just need to
figure out how to direct the smarts!

so long, & thanks for all the smarts!
The real work of social change happens daily. It isn’t a
workshop, a book, a blog, a platform, or a paradigm. It is
a shared process that involves people & our planet.
So join us! Teach us! Inspire us!
The future starts now.
