Mentoring  as a part of CPD Carol Brooks  Hon FCLIP
What is mentoring? A supportive form of development A process of helping an individual manage their career and improve skills An interpersonal process … big ears, small mouth … and lots of other skills
What is CILIP mentoring? Process which enables and supports a CILIP qualification candidate to:  achieve their own potential  develop a commitment to continuous CPD discuss professional issues  identify appropriate evidence  so they can gain their validation of professional  practice from CILIP
Who can be a mentor? A mentor is generally someone who has direct experience of the profession/role of the individual  They can: pass on knowledge and experience open doors to otherwise out-of-reach opportunities guide through the process help the development of reflective practice
What makes a good mentor Having an intuitive understanding of learning issues Being able to build a strong relationship Accepting of rejection of suggestions, ideas and advice Taking real pleasure in the success of others Seeing it as a ‘giving’ process Being committed
Mentoring as a CPD activity You learn as much as they do You need to evaluate and review both their needs and your own learning all the time It expands your perspectives It gives powerful personal insights An opportunity to share experience and wisdom  A reaffirmation of approaches
Who Mentors the Mentors? There is no formal process, however, Mentor Support Network Regional meetings Organisational Structures Buddy Mentoring Lis-Cilip-Mentor Own Mentoring process
