Fundamentals of Exercise Therapy
Unit 3: SOFT tissue mobilizations;
Muscle Energy Techniques
Dr.Shreevidya Karthik
Lecture No: 1
Overview
• Manipulative Therapists developed Muscle Energy
Techniques (METs) beginning with Fred Mitchell (1909-74),
in the 1950s, who started with the pelvis.
• gentle but highly effective treatment of musculoskeletal
dysfunction.
• MET uses isometric or isotonic contractions as a way of
– lengthening tight muscle
– strengthening weak muscle
– mobilising joints
– relieving congestion in the tissues.
• Muscle energy techniques (MET) are a class of soft manipulation methods
that incorporate precisely directed and controlled, patient initiated,
isometric and/or isotonic contractions, designed to improve
musculoskeletal function and reduce pain.
How does this Help???
• Isometric contraction is contraction of the muscle against a counterforce so that no
movement occurs.
• Isotonic contract is contraction in which movement does takes place, in that
counterforce offered by therapist is less than/greater that of patients/person.
• A)concentric contraction
• B)eccentric contraction
Physiological Principles behind techniques
– Post-Isometric Relaxation (PIR) and
– Reciprocal Inhibition (RI).
Thank You
