This article describes the design and implementation of a web-based survey of 450 dental professionals to investigate internet use in clinical practice. The survey blended principles of mail surveys with online data collection. The response rate was 74.2% with 84% completing the survey online and 16% via email or fax. Issues identified included technical problems, usability issues, and a programming error. The web-based survey cost 38% less than a comparable mail survey. Web-based surveys can reduce costs and turnaround time compared to mail surveys.
