This document provides an overview of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) generators. MHD generators directly convert thermal energy in hot ionized gas to electrical energy without intermediate mechanical conversion. There are two types of MHD systems - open cycle systems which use fossil fuels and closed cycle systems which circulate working fluids. MHD generators have advantages over conventional power plants like higher efficiency up to 50%, no moving parts, smaller size, and ability to reach full power quickly. However, challenges include high operating temperatures and costs.
