The MIACell project developed a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system called PapCAD to help pathologists diagnose cervical pap smear tests more accurately and efficiently. PapCAD uses high resolution digital images of pap smears and advanced machine learning to automatically detect abnormal or pathological cells, marking them for the pathologist to review. It was developed using IBM Cell Broadband Engine accelerators to handle the intensive computing, and its benefits include helping less experienced pathologists and improving more experienced pathologists' productivity.
