Orange was facing increasing infrastructure costs and downtime issues. Their options were to do nothing, expand their fixed infrastructure for £1m upfront and £3.5m over 3 years, or move to the cloud. Moving to the cloud would cost £100k upfront and £1.8m over 3 years, making it the cheapest option. Rackspace had slightly lower costs than AWS but AWS offered better APIs, documentation, products, and had data centers in Europe. Orange designed their cloud architecture to be anti-fragile using multiple data centers, environments, automation, and central control. They used various AWS technologies and configuration management tools to implement their cloud solution.
