- 3. How Columns are used The column was an architectural invention which ceilings to be supported without the use of solid walls, thereby increasing the space which could be spanned by a ceiling. When designing the exterior of a home, columns can used in a variety of ways. • To provide structural support • To achieve a decorative or architectural design • To cover over an existing column to refresh the look of a home
