Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a spherical bacteria known to produce a cytotoxin called Panton Valentine leucocidin (PLV) which destroys leukocytes and kills tissue. Though only 5% of Staphylococcus strains produce the disease causing toxin, S. aureus that produces PLV can cause serious infections due to its ability to damage white blood cells and tissue. The document provides an introduction to S. aureus and its ability to produce the toxin PLV which enables it to cause disease.
