Schedule of the Newbery Process
Hosting  a Mock Newbery Program
Purpose of a Mock Newbery Program To encourage students to read a variety of genres. To expose students to quality literature written by a variety of authors. To promote the Newbery Medal.
January Establish a Partnership Plummer-Motz School Falmouth Memorial Library
March Create a Mock Newbery Blog
April Pique the Interest of Teachers Attend team meetings and promote the program. Newbery lunch group for teachers
May Educate students about  the Newbery Medal History & Criteria
Newbery Medal Criteria 1. The Award is restricted to authors who are citizens or residents of the United States.  2. The book must be a self-contained entity, not dependent on other media (i.e., sound or film equipment) for its enjoyment. 3. Books in a series do not qualify unless the book submitted can stand alone.

Stay Informed About New Books
Good Reads  Mock Newbery Group
Follow Other Mock Newbery Blogs
September Add copies of books on the first reading list to school and public library collections. Send note to teachers about recommended read alouds. Film book trailers and book talks.
 
September Create registration forms. Set dates for book club meetings.  Invite teachers to join the groups.
October, November, & December Book Club Meetings- once per month Members agree to read at least 2 books per month from the reading lists.
Book Club Discussions
December Book Club Members nominate their favorite books to the Top Ten list. The Top Ten list is revealed at the last book club meeting. Students have two weeks to continue reading before the vote takes places.
January Host Mock Newbery Assembly Invite community members to be guest readers. Select a passage from each Top Ten book to be shared at assembly. Prepare ballots for voting at the end of the assembly.

January 10, 2011 Students and teachers viewed live streaming of the Newbery Medal announcements in the school library.
What would we do differently? Create smaller discussion groups.  Meet during lunch periods instead of after school. Select fewer titles and purchase more copies of each title. Show the video of the book discussion to interest students before they sign up.
