Models of Teaching
INTRODUCTION
Success of teaching is determined by the
expertise of the teacher to use
appropriate methods and strategies
according to the purpose of teaching,
nature of the subject and characteristics
of the learner.
Definition: Models of Teaching
Teaching models are instructional designs that
describe the process of specifying and producing
particular environmental situations which cause
the student to interact in such a way that specific
change occurs in his behavior (Joyce&Weil).
A model of teaching consists of guidelines for
designing educational activities and
environments. It specifies ways of teaching and
learning that are intended to achieve certain
kinds of goals (Weil& Joyce).
Some more definitions…
According to Paul D Eggen et al. models are prescriptive
teaching strategies designed to accomplish particular
instructional goals.
A model of teaching consists of guidelines for designing
educational activities and environment. Model of teaching is a
plan that can also be utilised to shape courses of studies, to
design instructional materials and to guide instruction ( Passi,
Singh & Sansanwal).
Conclusion
Models of teaching help the teacher in
Planning and organising the teaching
learning activities and also in Planning
curriculum the student- teacher interaction,
and to develop specific teaching aids.
A model of teaching is a pattern/ plan which
can be used with a view to shape a
curriculum/course, to select appropriate
instructional material and to guide the
teacher’s action.
Assumptions of Models of Teaching
Teaching create an appropriate environment for
learning.
The elements of teaching interact together
Different teaching goals can be realised by arranging
these elements in different ways
Learning experiences are provided in a country
environment created for attaining the goals
Functions
Theory of learning is formulated
Enhance the ability of students to achieve various learning
outcomes
Helps in the selection of instructional materials, appropriate
educational activities and stimulates innovative approaches
in education
Helps in achieving desirable teacher-pupil interaction
Elements of Models of Teaching
 Focus
 Syntax
 Social System
 Principle of Reaction
 Support System
 Effect
 Application
Features
 Learning outcomes, what the students should perform after
completing a particular instruction is specified
 The environment is specified, environmental conditions under which
student responds
 criterion of performance that is expected from students is specified
 operations, that is the mechanism that provides for the reaction of
students and interaction with the environment are mentioned
 The systematic procedure is specified, the steps to be followed while
planning and implementing the model
Family
 Based on the psychological basis of instruction and
learning and based on the goals to be attained, Bruce
Joyce and Marsha Weil classified models into four families
 Information processing family
 Social family
 Personal family
 Behaviour systems family
Information Processing Models
 The process through which people acquire and organise
data, sense problem, generate solutions to them and
develop concept and language for conveying them is
known as information processing.
 Inductive Thinking Model
 Inquiry Training Model
 Concept Attainment Model
