This document discusses the benefits of modular construction and passive house design. It notes three major challenges in construction: improving productivity, skilled labor shortages, and increased demands for energy efficiency. Modular construction aims to address these by allowing for improved quality control, minimized delays, reduced labor costs and improved safety. When combined with passive house principles using high insulation and breathable materials, modular construction can achieve nearly zero energy buildings mandated in Europe by 2020. Projects in New York, Australia and Italy were highlighted as examples combining modular and passive house concepts.
