Polygons Understanding the Basics
Polygon breakdown: Poly, meaning “many.” Gon, meaning “sides.” Polygons have straight sides. Polygons cannot have curved sides.
Sides are made up of line segments. All polygons are closed figures. Common examples include: squares, rectangles, triangles. Polygons can be named by their number of sides or by the letters of their vertices.
Two types of Polygons Regular Polygon: Sides are the same length and the angles are all the same. Examples include: square, and stop sign. Irregular Polygon: Everything else that is classified as a polygon, but is not regular. Examples include: rectangle
Triangles Triangles are 3 sided polygons. The angles of a triangle add up to be 180 degrees. Triangles can be classified by both their angles and sides.
Angles: Acute, Right, and Obtuse. Sides: Scalene, Isosceles, and Equilateral.
Quadrilaterals Quadrilaterals are 4 sided polygons. Examples include: Rectangles, Squares, Rhombus, Trapezoid. Parallelogram is a type of quadrilateral. Parallelograms have two sets of parallel sides (square and rectangle).
