as active participants in reconciliation we are committed to moving forward together in a spirit of

The Fifth Wave of Public Health
Contemporary Public Health (2000 - Present)
Key Challenges Addressed
• Population-wide obesity despite individual interventions
• Persistent health inequalities in affluent societies
• Rising mental health problems and loss of wellbeing
• Climate change and environmental health threats
Defining Characteristics
• Complex systems approach - recognising health challenges as interconnected problems requiring
multi-sectoral solutions
• Focus on wellbeing rather than solely disease prevention
• Sustainability perspective - addressing planetary health and environmental limits
• Upstream interventions - creating conditions that make healthy choices easier

The Fifth Wave of Public Health
Contemporary Public Health (2000 - Present)
Examples of Fifth Wave Practice
• Urban planning for active transport and mental wellbeing
• Food systems approaches addressing nutrition and sustainability
• Cross-sector collaboration (health, environment, economics, urban planning)
• Community-centred approaches to mental health promotion
Paradigm Shift
• Moving from "diagnose and treat" to "create conditions for health and
wellbeing" through understanding health as part of larger social and
environmental systems.

Watch this video
In this video we take a look at
Public Health – the science and
art of preventing disease,
prolonging life, and promoting
health through the organized
efforts of society. Public health
focuses on improving the health of
a population and preventing
health problems before they
happen. It is a broad field and
covers a range of topics such as
air pollution, epidemiology,
communicable disease control,
risk assessment and health
promotion. We’ll take a look at
what public health is, how it is
different to clinical medicine, who
is responsible for doing it and how
it’s done!

"The science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting physical and
mental health and efficiency through organized community efforts ..." (Winslow, 1920)
"Primary health care is a whole-of-society approach to health and well-being... It
addresses the broader determinants of health and focuses on the comprehensive and
interrelated aspects of physical, mental and social health and wellbeing... throughout
the lifespan, not just for a set of specific diseases... ensures people receive
comprehensive care - ranging from promotion and prevention to treatment,
rehabilitation and palliative care - as close as feasible to people’s everyday
environment." (WHO, 2021)
"... a social movement of the nineteenth century that worked to improve living
conditions through the development of physical infrastructure, including water,
sanitation and housing, as well as policy and legislation to support and drive change."
