Module 3 Lesson 1 Mastery
Assignment 1

New England:
• Colonies in this group:
– The colonies included in the New England group
included Massachusetts, Rhode Island,
Connecticut and New Hampshire.
New England:
• Important attributes of the New England
Colonies:
– The New England colonies main focus in their
government was religion and morals.
– Because of the large amounts of Pilgrims that
settled in the New England colonies, they all were
seeking refuge from the corruption in the
government back in Europe.
– The New England Colonies were best known for
their skills at sea, specifically their seaports.
New England:
• Impact of Triangular Trade:
– The New England Colonies used their specialties
to join triangular trade and sent Rum and ship
building knowledge to Europe.
New England:
• Impact of the Great Awakening:
– The great awakening allowed the
colonists to realize that they had
power in controlling the influence in
society, so when it hit the New
England colonies, it allowed religion
to become a major part of the way
the colonies were governed.
– The great awakening hit the hardest
in the New England colonies and
had the largest impact.
New England:
• Impact of Enlightenment
thinking on government:
– The New England colonies
used their religious views,
combined with logic to
form their views on the
government. They used
logical thinking (the main
idea of the enlightenment)
to prove the existence of
god, which was transferred
over into how they
governed themselves.
Middle:
• Colonies in this group:
– The colonies included in the middle colonies
group included: New York colony, Delaware
colony, New jersey colony , and Pennsylvania
colony.
Middle:
• Important Attributes of this group:
– The Middle Colonies shared attributes of both the
New England Colonies and the Southern Colonies.
– The Middle Colonies were successful farmers
because of the very fertile soil.
– They had success in sea related tasks such as ship
building as well, because of their location.
– This region produced a variety of different
resources including furs, corn, livestock, wheat,
textiles and shipbuilding.
Middle:
• Impact of triangular trade:
– Because of the resource richness of the middle
colonies, they played a major role in triangular
trade. Their main exports included agriculture,
iron ore and fur.
Middle:
• Impact of the Great Awakening:
– Because of the Quakers role in settling
Pennsylvania (part of the middle colonies), religion
was an integral part of everyday life which was
translated into the government.
Middle:
• Impact of Enlightenment
thinking on government:
– Specifically in Pennsylvania, the
Quakers used their new found
way of thinking through logic
and religious freedom to form
the government. Toleration was
a main idea for the government.
All kinds of people (ethnicities)
and belief systems (religions)
were accepted.
Southern:
• Colonies in this region:
– Virginia Colony, Maryland Colony, North Carolina
Colony, South Carolina Colony and Florida Colony.
Southern:
• Important Attributes of this group:
– Because of their location, the southern colonies were
in the ideal spot for farming- the nutrient rich soil and
the warm climate allowed for much success in
farming.
– Because of the promising attributes of good farming
conditions, the southern colonies were settled for
profit.
– Virginia, one of the southern colonies, established the
first successful colony, Jamestown.
– The preferred style of farming were Plantations.
Because of this, the use of a mass number of slaves
was necessary.
Southern:
• Impact of triangular trade:
– Some of the major exports of the Southern
colonies included corn, tobacco, sugar, rice, and
cotton.
Southern:
• Impact of the Great Awakening on this group:
– The protestant dominations of Presbyterians, Baptists and
Methodists were became very popular in the southern colonies.
– People really responded to the idea of coming together to worship,
and having open worship services for all people.
– The idea of freedom of religion and religion for all was very enticing
to the people of the southern colonies.
Southern:
• Impact of enlightenment thinking on the
government:
– Enlightenment thinking brought the main idea of
logical thinking, and with that the southern
colonies came up with the idea of dividing up the
power in the government so that one person did
not hold all of the power.
