Module 3 Reflection
Zining (Ray) Lai
The Experience
• Position: Animation Trainee
• It’s a small studio focused on Chinese ancient fairy tale theme 3D
animation
• Recent works of the studio:
Nezha The Peak of True
Martial Arts
Strengthened Competency:
Digital Literacy
• The help from other colleagues is very limited, I have to explore the
potential methods by searching tutorials on YouTube, online 3D
animation community forums, and the company’s database.
• There are many online tutorials but not all of them are showing the
right methods. In most cases, the tutorial is brilliant but it’s not fitting
well with other elements from my scenes and I have to pick the right
one for my scenes.
• The company server contains lots of animation resources for me to do
my research more specifically.
My Approach
• First of all, I will go through the design package we got and talk to my
supervisor about my ideas. He knows every single material from the
company database and he points me in the exact direction of what I
needed.
• To find out the right content online, I will always be cautious about the
keywords I typed in the search engine. Fuzzy keywords can lead to
misleading material and cost extra time on useless research.
• Looking for answers from online forums can be time-consuming, but
maybe there are people who had similar struggles before. Dig into the
forums and sharing our ideas with others may also help us back as
reflection.
First Time Animating An Action Scenario
Stretching Outside of My Comfort Zone
• I was assigned a one-minute-long action scenario from the show,
which I never had a chance to get my hands on before.
• It contains elements like fight choreography, VFX, and cinematic
camera movements.
• Huge challenge for a junior level animator, but I do feel grateful they
give me the opportunity and time to explore a new area.
First Time Animating An Action Scenario
Stretching Outside of My Comfort Zone
• Since it’s a very challenging mission, I did ask my supervisor for help. We did
did lots of studies on the recent feature animation films for inspiration. For
some technical issues, my supervisor suggested I take a look at a free
powerful animation add-on for Maya called Atool and see if its function can
help me out with the overcome we are looking for in the scenes. Research
for work is not as easy as it seems. I need to work on my assignment from
the ground while trying to find the right effects for it. Most of the time, I
thought I find the right solution for my scenes and after I put it to use, it was
was far from what I expected. There is no other thing I can do but reset the
whole scene again and find another possibility. The whole process is
struggling but when I saw the result, I think it worth all the time I spent.
The competencies that need to be improve
Leadership
• I never consider myself team leader material but when I step into
module 2 for my internship, I realized everyone has to learn to obtain
leadership competency to a certain level.
• I think building up an active mindset is crucial for improving leadership.
leadership. Not everyone has to be on the top but we need to learn to
to recognize the strength of others, be aware of those in need, and
share our support. After all, we all come together for a greater
purpose.
The competencies that need to be improve
Creativity and Innovation
• Being creative is one of the most important competencies as an
animator.
• My supervisor once told me if I don’t keep innovating, I will reach a
plateau at some point in my career. He also shares his tip for the
solution: start collecting great animation performance clips from now
and name them with specific keywords for quicker searching. Once the
the archive is large enough, no matter how stuck is in our heads, we
can always look into the collection which can open our mind.
That’s all!
Thank you folks and hope to see
you all soon on campus!
