Kai Jian is extremely passionate about his comics collection. In fact, he secretly wishes to
open a comics shop in future. Once at a company camp, those in his tent were discussing
ambitions. The rest were all talking about being bankers, engineers, lawyers and doctors.
Suddenly, Kai Juan felt that his ambition was not too ambitious enough. When it came to his
turn, he blurted out that he wanted to be a teacher, to which the others agreed was a good
ambition. However, he did not rest well that night. He wondered what his friends would say if
they discovered his “low” ambition.

Describe in your own words what is passion? is.

                               GOAL SETTING
Goals help you to focus on where you want to go at each step of your
journey.

Things to remember after writing down your goals :

( √ Use this as a checklist when setting goals )

 Write down what you will do to reach your goal (for example, study, plan, save up,
    practise, tell someone).

 Read out your goals to yourself, once a day, every day.

 Do something towards achieving your goal regardless of whether it is a big or small steps.

 Make sure your behavior is consistent with your goal.

 Revise your goals every month,; tick off the ones that you have achieved and reset the
    ones you have not achieved.

 Remember that you can use SMART goals for any area of your life!

Case Study 2

Jimmy feels that he enjoys making music and while he spends quite a bit of time practising on
his guitar, it is all worth it. He wants to be a singer and has already won his friends’ approval.
Each week, he is often roped in to play for the company’s devotion and in fact has appeared
in the finals of various constituency events.

One evening at dinner, his parents told him that he was wasting too much time on his guitar
and he should spend more time on his schoolwork. They told him to give up his next
competition, which is the District Talent time. Jimmy feels trapped since he is the Company’s
representative at that competition.

What can Jimmy do to overcome this obstacle?

What alternative can you propose to him?

Help him to set a goal so that he can develop his passion. Use the checklist to decide if it
is a SMART goal.
