The masthead is in a sans serif font. The main image is covering the heading this shows that the magazine will be recognised by a certain amount of the masthead. In a black font shows lack of colour on the cover and is part of a limited colour pallet. A small grab quote under the cover line allows the reader to get more information on what is to come. By having a small grab quote they are showing what is in the article but are not taking up so much space that it makes other stories unnecessary. Also they are not giving to much away to the reader making them want to read on. Rule of thirds is used to separate the cover into equal segments. There are the main cover lines on the left and right and the middle is for the main image. The M is on the left of MOJO so when the cover is stacked then the M is visible. The barcode is located in the bottom left as it is in most cases, By doing this it allows the main bulk of the article to be noticed but the bar code is in a good place to be seen The main cover line is located through the middle of the main image as it is used as an anchor. By having it in a stencilled sans serif red font it is noticeable but does not contrast with the image. The fact it is so visible it will show a form of importance to the reader. By having it go through the middle of the image makes it so that the reader must not miss out on what the article will be talking about again making the reader want to read on. The header is of an offer. By doing this it is at the top of the cover so is not taking up much room as a main part of the magazine but so it can be seen as an attraction to the reader. An offer will attract the reader when it is on the shelves making them want to purchase. The main image is a medium close up of Bruce Springsteen. It is anchoring the main cover line that over laps it. The fact that is over the masthead slightly shows that it takes priority in the magazine and should be noticed. The medium close up allows us to see a lot of what the image is of. By having an older artist on the front of the cover will appeal to a range of people. The magazine is traditionally younger but by having an older artist on the front will appeal to an audience of around 35-50
The most part of the contents is taken up by an i mage of a singer in the article. This shows an area of importance. By doing this it can be related to a page in the magazine. Also when the page is turned the first thing that will be seen is a picture of the person so the singer will be seen at first sight. Automatically this will appeal to many people as they will want to know what the image relates too. This artist is from a younger generation appealing to mainly a younger generation of around 15-30 making them come across of a modern magazine also. On this side is a list of the article title and the page number. A limited colour pallet is used of red and white red is the page numbers and white is the article. They also use a brief description of what the article will be about. This will help the reader as they can read what it is about and decide whether they want to read the article The title of the magazine is used on the contents rather than actually calling it a contents. It is an unorthodox way o laying it out however it is used in a way that makes it look effective. The fact that they repeat the title of the magazine shows that they want to show off there image and want people to know who they are. By having the writing in a sans serif font, in bright white on a dull background will attract the reader The date and the issue number are used on the banner. It shows how long the magazine has been operating for in the issues showing success to the reader. By having it in a smaller font means that the writer does not want to take up as much space on this area as they do of the contents. By having a grab quote in the contents it shows that an article must be read. By having it after the cover it shows that the reader has more to read on for after they have seen the front cover. The general layout of the contents is very unorthodox and looks basic. However it is effective this edition. The whole page is dominated by one picture . Which is different from the main image on the cover,. This suggest an element that the image on this is just as important as the one on the cover. There is not much general text of this contents suggesting that they are focusing on two or three stories.
A whole page is focussed on the artist. By doing this they are showing that the artist is important. The fact that the artist is wearing an open polo shirt in a white background makes the mise en scene connote the image of a relaxed artist making the magazine look more reader friendly. The title of the article is in a bubbly sans serif writing in a white colour on a black background. The fact that this is in such a bubbly writing in a strange form of writing shows us that the artist does not take this seriously. Also the fact that it is a graffiti style connotes the image of a friendly magazine not trying to be too serious. The drops cap on the letter Y relates to the heading in the font style. By doing this they are showing the article will have an important feel to it and the start should be noticed. The stand first is in a blue background with a white font. This is in relation to the colour of the image. Also the fact that they do this shows importance to what is said as the background is in a different colour so clearly the writer wants what is said to be seen. The page number is in the same colour along with the title of the magazine. By doing this they are keeping with the colour theme of the magazine. The text itself is in two columns and is broke up into 4 paragraphs. The organised layout and the amount of texts shows us that the text takes priority as what is being said needs to take importance. The Byline is in a different colour background. It is a grey font which again allows the font to stand out. In a white colour. The writing is also in a Graffiti style showing a unsophisticated side to the magazine. By putting it in a dull background allows the reader to see it but not take too much notice of what is being said. The background is in a dark black. This is used to emphasise the text but also relating to the article shows that the artist is in dark times. By doing this it helps the reader relate to what is said. The caption along with the main image is used to show what the artist is saying in relation to the article. By providing the reader with more information it allows them to see what is going on in more detail
One of the main elements that is evident through all of the magazine is the simplicity of the layout. They focus one large striking image and all the way through they use a simple sans serif font. By doing this they are appealing to a wider range of people in a mixed age range but also they are making the design look effective. They use graffiti writing in the article for the masthead and a stencil font on the front cover. By doing this they are making the design varied but they are also making it so the reader can identify with what the article is trying to say. As for the font of the text and the colour. They use sans serif all the way through and focus on red, white and black throughout. By doing this in the colour scheme the limited colour pallet shows that they are not reliant on the colour to attract the reader but also they are not trying to bombard the reader with irrelevant need for colour. As for the use of a single striking image they are appealing to the reader as they are allowing them to see what they want to see and appeal to a mixed age range with a dominant older figure in an older singer, and a controversial younger artist that will appeal to the youth. The magazine focuses on consistency all the way through in the sense that they are aiming to appeal to a wide range of a middle brow audience. Based on what is displayed it is clear that there audience could range anywhere between 15-50. therefore the consistent features appeal to more gaining more readership.
