Genetics Research ProjectGenetic Engineering for Treatment or Cure of Disease and DisordersBy Corin Geoghegan and Sara Kelly
Basic Principals of GeneticsDominant traits mask (cover) recessive alleles.
In co-dominant the alleles are neither dominant nor recessive. Therefore neither alleles is masked (covered) in the offspring.
The offspring gets the half the number of chromosomes from each parent resulting in an offspring of a variation of the parent. Human Genome Project The project began in October 1990 and ended in June 2003, they were 2 years ahead schedule. The main goal of the Human Genome Project is to identify the DNA sequence of every gene in the genome.
An ethical concern about the human genome project is who should have access to genetic testing information. Also the privacy and confidentiality of the information. A social concern leads to a question: Should a person have knowledge that they are going to die?
GINA forbids incurrence companies to discriminate based on genetic testing. Also insurers are not able to request genetic testing. Genetic Disorder Human Allelic Disorders (Recessive)- Albinism, the lack of pigmentation in skin, hair, and eyes, is also a Mendelian human trait. Homozygous recessive (aa) individuals make no pigments, and so have face, hair, and eyes that are white to yellow. For heterozygous parents with normal pigmentation (Aa), two different types of gametes may be produced: A or a. From such a cross 1/4 of the children could be albinos.
Human chromosomal abnormalities- Sex-chromosome abnormalities may also be caused by nondisjunction of one or more sex chromosomes. Any combination (up to XXXXY) produces maleness. Males with more than one X are usually underdeveloped and sterile. XXX and XO women are known, although in most cases they are sterile
Researchers are learning that nearly all conditions and diseases have a genetic component. Some disorders, such as sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis are caused by mutations in a single gene. The causes of many other disorders, however, are much more complexHow can genetic counseling help perspective parents who have a genetic disorder regarding future children? The accompanying diagrams explain how hemophilia occurs in future children. In the first diagram hemophilia was carried in the male sex cell, then passed to all the daughters where as, all the sons are normal. In the second diagram, the female in the carrier and passes it to half of the sons and half of the daughters. Therefore, these parents may not want to have children due to the possibility of having a hemophilic child.
How are karyotypes used to predict genetic disorders?Karyotypes are used to predict genetic disorders by determining if you are missing a chromosome. What about have more than the normal amount of chromosomes? What if you have mixed up pieces of chromosome? If you are not a normal human karyotype it can help you predict future genetic disorders.Genetic Engineering to Clone Animals Argument 2Genetic Engineering to clone animals may be a good thing because some amimals may be extinct like the dinosaurs or may be almost extinct like polar bears! For the Polar Bears we may use the egg cell or the sperm to make more babies to keep the polar bears because polar bear play a major role in the ecosystem so there are many reason for Genetic Engineering to clone animals.
Why should we use Genetic Engineering to Cure or Treat Disorders and Diseases?Agument 1 Genetic Engineering is the alteration of an individual's genotype with the aim of choosing the phenotype of a newborn or changing the existing phenotype of a child or adult
We should use Genetic engineering to cure disorders and diseases because, it could help us cure AIDS and HIV, these are very dangerous disease! If we use Genetic Engineering to cure AIDS and HIV there would be no one to spread it to or no one to suffer from there 2 deadly diseases.

  • 12. Q In this chart it shows how many Adullt Men, Adult Women and children live/New/ Died because of these disease! Can We Use Genetics to Cure AIDS? Argument 3 Genetic engineering can be used to cure/treat disorders and diseases. Scientists are researching to find out if they can use genetic engineering to cure AIDS. The research shows that so far it is safe and realistic. The scientists used genetic engineering to develop blood cells that are resistant to AIDS, they did this with 6 people. If this works we can cure a very harmful disease that slowly kills your immune system and makes you liable to other diseases and illnesses. If the scientists’ use genetic engineering to cure this disease, then people won’t suffer from this terrible illness. Genetic engineering would do some good. Scientists Test Genetics on Mouse Agument 4 To predict the future of genetics, scientists tested genetic engineering on a mouse. A most common issue with this project is that the gene being looked at is usually mutated through life. Special technology regulated the gene in a temporary fashion.
