Graphing Example
• A parachutist is 300 m off the ground when she
jumps out of a plane. She falls for 5.0s before
opening her parachute. The parachute causes her
speed to decrease to a constant 4.0 m/s in 5.0 s
until she reaches the ground.
• You are required to draw the d-t, v-t, and a-t graph
for this problem and calculate all required
displacements, velocities, accelerations and times.
Start your graphs at t = 0.0 s, when the person just
leaves the plane and ending when she is just about
to hit the ground. Let her position at t = 0.0s be at
the origin of the d-t graph and let down be the
negative direction . Ignore any initial air resistance
and assume the parachutist only falls downwards
and all accelerations have constant values.
