Operation E-Cycle
Helping non-profits to obtain
technology equipment since 2010
Moving Forward Pittsburgh, Inc.
OPERATION E-CYCLE PROGRAM 4/2013
Operation E-Cycle History
The Operation E-Cycle Program started in
2010 when Jerry and Barbara Shafran
realized that their for-profit clients at
Ceeva, Inc., an IT services provider to the
Greater Pittsburgh area for 20 years, were
frequently upgrading their systems and
offering their used equipment to Ceeva.
Ceeva would then offer the equipment to
non-profits at a significant discount once
refurbished. When the Shafrans realized
that they could use Ceeva’s professional
resources to help the community’s non-
profits to obtain equipment they couldn’t
otherwise afford, Operation E-Cycle was
born as a program of Moving Forward
Pittsburgh, Inc. (formerly the National
Center for Non-Profit Excellence).

Computer Re-Use vs. Re-Cycling
• Computer RE-CYCLING
means taking the
machines apart and
reselling and disposing of
pieces, especially the
toxic ones, according to
laws.
• $670 is the environmental
cost to manufacture a
BRAND NEW PC and
monitor. (source: Bruce
Buckelew, www.otxwest.o
rg)
• Computer RE-USE means
wiping off data and
reloading the machine
with legal software to
allow someone else to
use the machine.

Franklin Center of Beaver County
Sandra Curry, Education Director
Franklin Center of Beaver County
“We needed laptops for our
summer program. At first we
were a little skeptical of the
concept of free equipment, but
we gave it a try and the results
have been fabulous. In an
environment where non-profits
are all being asked to do more
with less, this program has saved
us tens of thousands of dollars
and made our summer programs
more enjoyable and valuable for
the kids.”
www.franklincenter.org
The Franklin Center’s mission is to ensure the
delivery of human services and supplemental
education programs and opportunities for
citizens of Beaver County. This organization
provides human services and outreach and
referral services to low income & unemployed
Beaver County residents through
programming in three locations:
Aliquippa, New Brighton and Beaver Falls.

Tickets for Kids® Charities
Meryl Hellring, Communications
Director, Tickets for Kids® Charities
“We use the computers that
Operation E-Cycle donated to us
every day to run Tickets for Kids.
We have databases and web
forms that we use to receive
donated tickets from
theatres, museums, concerts and
sporting agencies. These
computers freed our budget to be
spent on programs and tickets for
the kids. We are thrilled to have
this equipment. It has been
crucial to our success.”
www.ticketsforkids.org
Since 1994 Tickets for Kids® Charities has
been dedicated to enriching the lives of
low-income and at-risk children and their
families through inclusion in a variety of
events and activities, creating access to the
world of ideas, accomplishment, creativity
and culture. TFK serves western PA, eastern
OH, and WV.

Three Rivers Youth
Sebastian Lacy, Vice President of Human
Resources and Administrative Services
“No more handwritten notes
and then going to the office to
enter the data into the
computer system. Obviously
this saves time and money and
allows our counselors to spend
more time in the field and less
time entering data at the
office. We are thrilled.”
www.threeriversyouth.org
Since 1880, Three Rivers Youth (TRY) has been
serving abused, neglected, runaway and
homeless youth and their families in Western
Pennsylvania. A private non-profit agency, TRY
provides a spectrum of educational, vocational,
residential, outpatient and in-home programs to
youth who are victims of physical and sexual
abuse, neglect, abandonment, school failure,
early pregnancy and drug and alcohol use.

Our Own Home
Lolly Kayser, Founder
Our Own Home
“Because we have a tight
budget, I searched the internet
for a low cost donated computer
in the Pittsburgh area . . . You
made it very easy for OOH to get
a computer to fit our needs . . .
Our trainees are keeping records
for their mobile automotive
detailing business on the
computer and it is working great.
The trainees are gradually
building their computer skills and
are quite proud of their
achievements.”
www.ourownhome.org
Our Own Home’s mission is to
educate, advocate and develop
housing and vocational
opportunities for adults with a
serious mental illness.

“We use the four laptops and 3
desktops and printers in our newly-
created Genesis Learning center.
Because of your organization, we can
now assist our pregnant women in
need by allowing them to work on
job readiness skills, tutoring and
continuing education in our lab on
your donated laptops. Internally, we
have increased our efficiency by
having more computers in our
conference rooms for client intakes
and counseling and class sessions.”
