- 2. This slide show was developed to help patrons become familiar with where various materials are shelved.
- 3. Things you need to know… The colored dots indicate the language of the material. English French German Spanish Other languages
- 4. J REF 790.3 SMI En Known as the call letters, the top line indicates where the material is shelved. The numbers mean it goes in the nonfiction section as well as indicating where in the section it belongs. These letters stand for the first three letters of the author’s last name. Like the dots, this indicates the language of the material: En – English Fr – French Ge – German Sp – Spanish The spine label provides all the information needed to shelve the material… Example:
- 5. Call letters used at AIS: E - Easy ER - Early Reader J - Juvenile J REF - Juvenile Reference REF - Reference F - Fiction 790.33 (example) Nonfiction V - Video AC - Audio Cassette DVD - DVD PROF - Professional
- 6. The following is an example of the correct order used for nonfiction materials: 612 SMI 612.003 SMI 612.031 JON 612.031 SMI 612.7 SMI 612.77 SMI 612.782 SMI Shelving by Dewey Decimal: *NOTE* - When multiple books have the same call numbers, sort alphabetically by the authors’ last names.
