Mulimuli
Inspiration for Change
Establishment of an urban community center with an integrated hostel in
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Project Presentation, 2018

The Problem and the Opportunity
- In Tanzania unemployment under the youth is 2-3 times higher than under adults
- Highest unemployment under young women in urban areas
- Young people often lack soft skills and practical experience due to the very
theoretically oriented educational system

The Problem and the Opportunity
- Voluntourism is a fast-growing industry worldwide
- Host countries are foremost developing countries
- «pseudo-sustainability»: most voluntourism companies promote with
stereotypes («help the poor children in Africa») in contrary to the harmful
effects the industry can actually have (see sources below)
«Before you pay to volunteer abroad, think of the harm you might do» (The Guardian, 2010):

2 Voluntourism – creating more harm than good?
The Problem and the Opportunity
• Tanzania is ranked as 2nd fastest growing economy in Africa and 8th in the world (WEF 2016)
• Vast entrepreneurial opportunities in the country
• Under new immigration laws employment of foreigners is declining: opportunities open-up for
the Tanzanian youth
• Tourism industry with tremendous growth potential with unique tourist attractions such as the
Kilimanjaro, Serengeti and Zanzibar
• Very peaceful and safe travel destination

Lack of

Disorientation
Self-doubts
Lack of
power to act
Our mission is to give all our visitors the inspiration to realize their capacity,
develop their passion and aspiration and take actions to pursue their goals in life.
Our Mission
Our main activities with a focus on the youth groups in our community will be:
- Establish a community farm to provide a platform for people to start their farming trials, improve
existing farming ventures in the community and supply farming inputs and advice to the community
- Organize workshops, events and leisure activities (e.g. cooking, playing games, dancing, music,
movies etc.)
- Allow guests from the guesthouse to actively participate in Mulimuli and experience the Tanzanian
Culture (create a sustainable form of voluntourism)
Mulimuli is a joint project between «Teddy’s Home» (a Tanzanian backpackers hostel)
and «BongoFISH» (a Tanzanian agriculture company).
Our vision is to become a role model for the tourism industry to for inspiration, cultural exchange
and knowledge transfer for the community around us and our guests from all over the world.
Our Solution
Use existing supply chains of BongoFISH to deliver the organic products from the community farm to the high-
end gastronomy market outside the Mulimuli community (to be able to finance ongoing trainings/workshops)

Our Solution
• … inspire people to develop their own ideas
• … be self-funding after the initial investment (through farm sales,
workshop fees)
• … create something scalable and long-lasting
• … not make people dependent from our project
• … not take away responsibility from people
• … not impose ideology and religion on other people
Mulimuli will …
Who are we?
BongoFISH is a Tanzanian social
enterprise with the goal to empower
people to start and operate their own
profitable fish farm. Thereby, the focus
lies on small and medium enterprises.
The objective of the company is to
provide all the necessary inputs to the
fish farmers: fry/fingerling (small baby
fish), fish feed and fertilizer, equipment,
capital services and know-how.
Teddy’s Home is a backpackers hostel in
Makongo Juu, Dar es Salaam. The target
customers are low budget individualist
travelers.
With its location next to a protected area
and with the friendly suburban
community around as well as the large
garden with the size of a football pitch
Teddy’s Home enables its guests a
uniquely green, relaxed and inspirational
experience in Dar es Salaam.
Teddy’s
Home Hostel
• We are a team of six young entrepreneurs (25-32 years old; christian, muslim and agnostic)
• We have been working and living together for over one year
• We would like to inspire others and pass our passion for taking initiative on to other people
• We are all passionate about farming
• We all know the challenges, struggles and failures one has to go through to set up a project
(whether it is successful or not)
• We are individualists who know that we can only achieve great things in a team
Who are we?
Who are we?
TEAMFOTO
• Established/operated a small scale fish farming
R&D facility to test inputs (feed and fingerlings)
• First sales (live tilapia fingerlings and fresh table-
sized tilapia)
• Currently establishing a tilapia pilot hatchery
• R&D on lettuce production with first sales to
potential customers
• Establishment of «Teddy’s Home», a backpacker
hostel in Makongo Juu, Dar es Salaam (since April
2017)
• Marketing through booking.com, airbnb and
facebook
• Already acommodated over 50 guests
The two ventures rent a house together in Makongo Juu, Dar es Salaam. There is over 1’000m2 of potential
gardening space inside the compound that can be used for the community garden project and workshops.
Apart from the fish farming facility we have so far also constructed small farm houses in our garden where we
currently keep 7 chickens and 5 goats.
What have we achieved so far?
