St. Mary’s College of Maryland called on the KBE/Newman design-build team
to complete its multi-phased residence complex. Phases 1 and 2 were complet-
ed one full semester ahead of schedule, despite working in some of the worst
winter weather on record in Maryland. Phase 3 completed the nine-building,
wood framed residence hall complex set on St. Mary’s historic waterfront
campus.

                      The facilty also includes the Sierra Breakfast Café, which serves gourmet
                      coffee, seasonal fruit and signature breads. Additional amenities include an

sf, with 105 suites in a three-story wood-frame building with an EIFS

facade.  The hotel offers studio, one-bedroom and studio double suites.

stovetop, living area with television/DVD player, and a spacious, well-lit

KBE Building Corporation has worked with Whitney Center and the Project Team since 2005,
providing preconstruction planning and construction services for the major expansion of this
Continuing Care Retirement Community. The Whitney Center “Renaissance Project” encompasses
the construction of a 7 story, 195,000 sf independent living facility, which will provide 87 additional
Independent Living units ranging from 1,400 sf to 1,800 sf. The project also includes a new parking
garage (2 levels), new maintenance garage and shop and extensive building renovations. Renovations
include modifications to two stairwells, renovations to the existing kitchen and dining areas as
well as renovations to the existing living room.  There is a one-story addition called “Main Street”
which is essentially a communicating corridor between the existing facility and new facility.  This
“Main Street” consists of all of the support functions for the community, including a bank, offices,
a community center, performing arts room, library, conference rooms, salon/message area, public
restrooms and a Bistro/Market area.  This area provides the everyday living for the 100 residents that
will occupy the 1st through 7th floors. This very complex project included extensive planning and
implementation of construction on an active campus for seniors.

This 7 story, 650,000 sf high-end Continuing Care Retirement Community
calls for 250 units of Independent Living, 43 Assisted Living units, and
26 Skilled Nursing units, set above an under-ground garage.  The facility
is located within the residential community at King Farm. The project is
currently under review by the US Green Building Council for LEED Silver

certification.

architect	   Arbonies King Vlock     The $12.8 million renovation project, started in 2003, has focused on converting more than 80
	       	    Architects & Planners   existing Senior apartments to Assisted Living apartments.  During this highly phased renovation,
size	 	      50,000 sf               the apartments have been updated and reconfigured to include handicapped-accessible kitchens,
cost 	 	     $12.8 million           bathrooms, doorways, and hallways. Each features new flooring, walls, paint, and fixtures. Each

The Retreat Assisted Living community is an 80,000 sf facility set on a 1.2-acre site across from Hartford Hospital.  The six-story, 100 unit complex was
constructed in 2004 for $11 million. The facility offers studio and one-bedroom apartments for 97 low-income residents and three caregivers. On-site
amenities include a wellness center, commercial kitchen, dining rooms, coffee shop, and beauty salon, as well as common rooms on every floor.


This project was sponsored by the Community Renewal Team (CRT), a Hartford-based not-for-profit organization. MBH Architects and KBE teamed
with CRT to provide design and construction management services. The facility was developed under a pilot program established by the State of Con-
necticut, which required teams to compete for funding. The Retreat was one of four projects awarded financing and is the largest test site in the pilot

program.

                       Set on 32 acres, this Assisted Living Retirement Community project
                       was completed in 11 months for $83 million in 2000. The 91,000
                       sf facility includes 54 one-bedroom apartments, 5 two-bedroom
                       apartments and 32 studio apartments. The restaurant-style dining
                       room and private dining room are supported by a commercial kitchen
                       and food prep areas. High-end public areas include a wellness center,
                       fitness room, country kitchen, library, salon, lounge, cafe, whirlpool
                       spa, as well as offices and meeting spaces. A special self-contained
                       unit called Safe Harbor provides 22 studio apartments for people with
                       Alzheimer’s disease or related memory disorders, and space for an
                       adult day care program. KBE and the owner participated in the overall
                       plan for the continuing care campus, and provided the entry and road
                       system for the balance of the campus. Forty age-restricted detached

                       cottages were subsequently constructed to complete the campus.

                                             ing offers a 24-hour emergency call system, individually
                                             controlled heating and cooling, and a sophisticated fire
                                             detection system.

                                             spite and Teaching program made possible by the close
                                             proximity of the hospital and medical school. The $7.2
                                             million project was completed in ten months.

The Whitney Center “Renaissance Project” encompasses the construction of a 7 story, 195,000 sf independent living facility, which will provide 87 additional Independent Living units ranging from 1,400 sf to 1,800 sf. The project also includes a new parking garage (2 levels), new maintenance garage and shop and extensive building renovations. Renovations include modifications to two stairwells, renovations to the existing kitchen and dining areas as well as renovations to the existing living room. There is a one-story addition called “Main Street” which is essentially a communicating corridor between the existing facility and new facility. This “Main Street” consists of all of the support functions for the community, including a bank, offices, a community center, performing arts room, library, conference rooms, salon/message area, public restrooms and a Bistro/Market area. This area provides the everyday living for the 100 residents that will occupy the 1st through 7th floors. This very complex project included extensive planning and implementation of construction on an active campus for seniors.

During this highly phased renovation, size 50,000 sf the apartments have been updated and reconfigured to include handicapped-accessible kitchens, cost $12.8 million bathrooms, doorways, and hallways. Each features new flooring, walls, paint, and fixtures. Each services General Contractor new residential floor has a common lounge area equipped with clothes washers and dryers, and a common kitchen. The building has remained fully occupied throughout construction. Over the course of the multi-phase projects, a new dining facility and administrative space have been added and upgrades completed for the parking and entrance lobby. The major renovation effort is funded by one of the largest HUD grants ever awarded. Other work includes the addition of an outside elevator and related renovations to improve access, including emergency access, throughout the building.

On-site amenities include a wellness center, commercial kitchen, dining rooms, coffee shop, and beauty salon, as well as common rooms on every floor. This project was sponsored by the Community Renewal Team (CRT), a Hartford-based not-for-profit organization. MBH Architects and KBE teamed with CRT to provide design and construction management services. The facility was developed under a pilot program established by the State of Con- necticut, which required teams to compete for funding. The Retreat was one of four projects awarded financing and is the largest test site in the pilot program.

KBE and the owner participated in the overall plan for the continuing care campus, and provided the entry and road system for the balance of the campus. Forty age-restricted detached cottages were subsequently constructed to complete the campus.

The fully sprinklered build- ing offers a 24-hour emergency call system, individually controlled heating and cooling, and a sophisticated fire detection system. owner Middlewoods of Farmington & United Methodist Homes of CT architect Associated Architects size 70,000 sf cost $7.2 million services General Contractor KBE built this Assisted Living facility on a site near the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farming- ton, Connecticut. The 70,000 sf HUD-funded project, provides 84 residential units and all required amenities. The not-for-profit operator has developed a unique Re- spite and Teaching program made possible by the close proximity of the hospital and medical school. The $7.2 million project was completed in ten months.
