What are Multiple Intelligences (MI)
and how do we incorporate MI into
Teaching Chinese?

Chinese Demo Lesson
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
An approach to teach that incorporates the
principle that learners’ intelligence is not a single
structure like IQ.
Introduced by Howard Gardner in 1983.
Not just one intelligence for the whole population,
but actually there is a broad variety of different
intelligences.

Using Multiple Intelligences
take into account on learners’
strength.
• Math vs. Writing
More about Multiple Intelligence (MI)?
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
Questions on the concept that a person
with low skills in one subject like math is
considered to be less intelligent, even
though they may be skilled in other areas
like art or sports.

Types of Intelligences
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
1. Linguistic Intelligence
Involves sensitivity to spoken and written
language, ability to learn languages, using
language as a means to remember
information
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
2. Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
Analyzing problems logically, carry
out mathematical operations,
investigating issues scientifically
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
3. Musical Intelligence
Skill in performance, composition and
appreciation of musical patterns, capacity
to recognize pitches, tones, and rhythm
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
4. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence
Using one’s whole body or parts of
the body to solve problems, using
mental abilities to coordinate
bodily movements
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
5. Spatial Intelligence
The potential to recognize and use
patterns of wide space and confined
areas to form mental images
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
6. Interpersonal Intelligence
Concerned with the capacity to understand
the intentions, motivations, and desires with
others, allows one to work effectively with
others
7. Intrapersonal Intelligence
The capacity to understand oneself
and appreciate one’s own feelings,
fears, and motivations, having an
effective working model of ourselves
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
8. Naturalistic Intelligence
The ability to understand and
organize the patterns in nature
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
8 Types of Intelligences
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
• Each student is seen as an individual with his or
her own strengths and weaknesses
• Teacher learns how each student will learn best
and can give suitable tasks to teach the content
• Motivate and build confidents for students
Pros of Multiple Intelligences
C)JIAN MONK LIU, NYU DCLT FORUM, 12/12/14
• Difficult to implement in many classrooms.
• Nearly impossible to implement all MIs at once.
• Difficult to tailor lessons to students’ many varied
intelligences
• However, can still be used by teachers every day by
keeping us aware of the huge differences in learning
styles of our students.
Cons of Multiple Intelligences
