Why do we want this?.
We want this because….
Ehm…. Yeah, why do we want this?
Why are we making software usable?
Why did we designers and developed

What do we want to accomplish?
So basically, what is User Experience?

I was graphical designer in a
full service internet agency.
WWF was one of my main
customers.
I designed a website for
children and WWF.
Based on the good results, I
was invited to the opening of
the Pandadroom (dream of

(famous Dutch amusement
park)

I ironed my shirt and
polished my shoes.
I was ready for this
grand opening.
And then, during this
festival, all of a
sudden, I couldn’t walk
anymore.
Partly paralyzed.
What the hell??
After a month of hospital tests and scans, the doctors diagnosed me with Multiple Sclerose.
It flipped my world upside down
In business for people.Page 13 Proprietary and ConfidentialADD Presentation Title > View > Header and Footer19-Oct-16
I spent 2 months at home, trying
to recover. Step by step I could
walk again.
Frustrating…
Then I worked one year my ass
off to get back to work full time.
Stressful…
Finally I was back on track but
was only allowed to do simple
tasks.
Disappointing…

One night I realized…
Life is so unpredictable.
How should I live, now I
understand that work and leisure
are not so self-evident?
In business for people.Page 15 Proprietary and ConfidentialADD Presentation Title > View > Header and Footer19-Oct-16
I did some math
Until we retire, we will spend 37,5% of our life on working,
including holidays and weekends, and daily 8 hours of sleep.
But it’s approximately 50/50 if we exclude mandatory activities in our leisure time

In business for people.Page 17 Proprietary and ConfidentialADD Presentation Title > View > Header and Footer19-Oct-16

‘doing things that I love to do’:
• Explore the world and learn
• Design beautiful things
• Make art

they need to do ‘the things
they love’ too.
Forever persevere.

We should let our users enjoy our software
It’s all about identification with an interface
If our users can identify themselves with software, unconsious, they will think:
• The software is more reliable and useful
• The software is more intelligent and knowledgeable
• They did a better job
• They had more fun
• This applies for everybody
• Completely automatic (that’s just how our brain works)

What should we do?
1. Everything that frustrates or upsets a user
should be automated, adjusted or deleted.
Behave like a ‘man behind the screens’.
2. Support our users to do the things they love,
that makes them happy, where they’re good at.
Behave as a reliable, professional, and
