Assignment 1: Write a 500 written analysis of representation of age and social
class. You must make reference to the micro areas of mise en scene and
camera, using appropriate terminology.
‘People just do nothing – The Godfather’
‘People just do nothing’ is a sitcom based In London about a council estate,
following the lives of a group of people. ‘The Godfather’ is an episode about
Angles Christening and Grindah is contemplating his choice of godfather.
At the beginning of the sitcom you see a high angle shot looking over the city of
London. Because the angle was looking down could suggest the estate/part of
the city is quite vulnerable and powerless. This relates to social class and status
because if you where at a higher class you would be looked up to and you would
show power, however in this case they are looked over which shows they are at
a lower social class than some other parts of London. As well as this the
buildings in the actual shot are of high raised flats. This could suggest the area
shown is a council estate and many of the people who live there can’t afford
anything more than a flat. This also relates to social class and status because if
the had more money than they did they would have a house.
In some parts of the drama, when characters are getting interviewed, you can
hear police cars in the background. This could indicate this part of London is
prone to crime. This relates to social class and status because if you where at a
high social class or status you would live in an area that had hardly any crime
and all the people living round that area will be at a higher social class or status
because the housed would be priced at around the same price.
In the sitcom the characters don’t use Standard English. They use words and
phrases such as, “geezer”, “Do ya know wa amen” and “Christianed”. The fact
that they use words and phrases like that could show the viewer that the
characters have low education and this is what the sociolect is of the area. This
links to social class and status because if they where educated better then the
way they speak may be different.
INDUCTION ASSESSMENT 2015
In the flat the wallpaper is hanging off the walls and the pictures are quite old
fashioned. This shows the props used are reflecting on the social class and
status of these people. Also the colour scheme in the flat is all clashing. This
could have been made like that to show the viewer the people that live there
can’t afford to buy new decorating materials and along as they have somewhere
to live they are okay.
There was a long shot of Steves whilst he was getting interviewed. This showed
what he looked like, the way he stood and the way he presented himself. He
was dressed in a tracksuit and a hat with sides over his ears. He looked quite
tired, like he had, had a rough night the night before. When he was standing he
stooped his head down and was looking at the floor. He kept moving side to side
whilst he was getting spoken to. This shows he was at unease or unconfident
about something. This could have also have been because of the drug addiction
he has. The way he was dressed could relate to social class because he may not
be able to afford new clothes to wear. The long shot of Steves can relate status
because he is centrally framed looking nervous compared to his the performance
from his friends Grindah and Beats. They treat him like a child because they
leave him to his own devices; he sleeps in a church sometimes. This shows he is
more childlike than them. This can also be presented when he sleeps in the
church. This could suggest a sense of homelessness because he takes each day
as it comes and because of his drug addiction he sleeps where he ends up on a
night.
Assignment 2:
