- 1. Nanuet Professional Development Technology Cheat Sheet Google Maps Google Maps is a simple way to bring maps into the classroom. A teacher can create a custom map for any area and share the map with students through a link or embed it in a webpage. Maps can be used in math and science to estimate distance, convert measurements and calculate ratios with scales. Maps can be used to explore area of interest in English and social studies. Google Maps lets you add place marks, lines and shapes over a map. You can add descriptions of places through place marks including multimedia photos, video and links in the description. 1) Navigate your browser to http://maps.google.com/. 2) Google Maps has two panels. Anyone can use Google Maps to look up an address or get directions but if you sign up for a Google account you will be given a feature called My Maps. My Maps lets you put annotations , descriptions and multimedia on your map. All of the markings on your map can be saved to share.
- 2. 3) My Maps will list all of the maps you have saved. I have clicked on my map Estimate the Area of Rockland. The Edit button lets you edit the title or description of the map. You can also edit any of the markings you put on the map. Below you can see place marks, a shape and a line I placed on my map. 4) If I click on Collaborate I can invite people to view or contribute to my map. You can Allow anyone to edit this map if you want to collect data.
- 3. 5) The right panel is where your map resides and any annotations you create on the map. In the upper left you can add a place mark and change the color, style or add your own image. You can also add a line or a shape. In the upper right you can get a link or embed code for your map. The bottom left has a map scale for conversions. You also have the option to zoom in or out, view the map in Google Earth and print. 6) When you click on a place mark or line map annotation you can add a Title and Description. Change the color or size of the place mark or line if you click on the picture. Rich Text will let you insert a link or picture and Edit HTML will let you embed a video.
