Direct speech quotes someone's exact words using quotation marks. Indirect speech reports what someone said without using their exact words. When changing direct to indirect speech, tenses are typically changed to be one tense back (e.g. present to past) and pronouns, time/place references may need to be adjusted. There are also specific rules for changing commands, questions, exclamations and other sentence types to indirect speech. Punctuation is used differently between direct and indirect speech.
