Native American Week
Third grade November 1st thru 5th
Nomad
Nomads are people who travel from place to
place without having a home in one fixed
place. Imagine if you did not have an address,
but lived in a tent and you might sleep in a
different places. This happened because
people had to go looking for food. This life was
true for all a very long time ago before people
figured out that they could use seeds to plant ,
and grow their own food.

Tribe
A tribe is a group of people. When we talk
about the Native Americans we can
understand a tribe to be the group of people
who hunt, gather and live together. Native
American tribes named themselves, think of it
like a moving city. Everyone in the tribe is
going to work together for the good of
everyone. Tribes still exist today in many
countries.

Chief
A Chief is a king or leader in a tribe. Massasoit was one of the Wampanoag
leaders. A chief will usually be wearing something different during a
ceremony.
Warrior
A warrior is a solider, someone who fights for their tribe. There were
very few warriors because the Native Americans are and always have
been very peaceful people. A warrior was skilled with a bow and
arrow, some were able to tame (domesticate) horses basically they
were amazing hunters.
Teepee
A teepee is a tent in the shape of a cone.
There is a hole in the top of the tent so that
cooking can happen inside the tent and the
smoke from the fire can get out. The teepee
can easily be taken apart and put back
together when the tribe decides to move.
Teepees provide shelter from the harsh
weather. Native American teepees were made
of either animal skin (leather) or of birch trees
(tree bark).

Ceremony
Any important thing that happens in our life we usually have a ceremony
for. When a family has a baby and the want to Baptize it, the baptism is a
ceremony. When people get married the wedding is a ceremony. When
people die, we have a funeral- the funeral is the ceremony. The things I just
mentioned are catholic ceremonies but other cultures and religions have
their own ceremonies. There are even ceremonies in government, like the
Changing of the Guards in London, England. Usually a ceremony has
certain certain key parts that are done in an order. For example, part of a
birthday ceremony includes a cake at the end, you don’t start the party with
cake, the order is important.

The Wampanoag
Ceremony – our
Thanksgiving
The Wampanoag understood that you cannot keep
taking from the earth without giving something back.
It has long been customary for horticultural Indian
people to have ceremonies in which they express
their thanks for a bountiful harvest. The
Wampanoag celebrated their harvest with a
ceremony, the Nikkomosachmiawene, that
combined feasting, dancing and ceremonial games
with a “give away” in which people gave some of
their possessions to the poor.
Canoe
A Canoe is a very narrow boat. Usually a canoe is open on the top
and big enough for two to four people to fit it. A canoe moves by a
person rowing or pushing with a paddle.
Canoe
Moccasins
A moccasin is a shoe made from deer skin or some other kind of soft
leather. Usually the shoe was decorated with some kind of beading.
Tomahawk
A tomahawk is an axe, a very
useful tool for a hunter-
gatherer tribe. A tomahawk is
usually decorated as you see
here.
Pottery
Pottery is made from clay. It is made by shaping the clay and then heating
the shape in an oven called a kiln. Pottery is one of the oldest art forms. In
museums through the world you will find ancient pottery.
Finished pottery
Prairie
Prairie is another name for
grasslands. Much of North
America has prairies. In a
prairie there is mostly grass
and wild flowers and not very
many trees.

Brave
Someone who is brave has a lot of courage. When you are brave you do
something even if it scares you because it is the right thing to do.
Here are some examples:
1. I see a little kid in the hallway and a big kid is making fun of him. Even
though I am scared of the big kid I tell him to leave the little one alone
and to pick on someone his own size. I was brave to stick up for the
little kid.
2. I know that an adult is asking me to doing something wrong, I may get
yelled at but I stick up for myself anyway. I bravely defended myself.
3. Firemen run into a burning building to rescue a family stuck in a house.
The firemen bravely rescue the family.
