HF communication systems provide long-distance communication capabilities for larger aircraft and are not usually found on light aircraft. The Rockwell Collins HF-220 system consists of an HF transceiver, power amplifier, antenna coupler, and control head. It operates in the 2-30 MHz range in various modes including SSB, AM, and data. The control head initiates transmission by grounding the keyline when the PTT is pressed, activating relays to supply power to the transmit circuits. Frequency is selected through the control head and synthesized in the transceiver. Received signals are amplified, mixed, filtered, and demodulated before being sent to the control head.
