Negative Keywords in PPC
Familiarize Yourself with Negative Keywords
A keyword is defined as ‘a significant word
used in an index’ (Oxford). In the
advertising field, identifying a keyword is
important in determining the types of
viewers you would like to be exposed to
your page in hopes of them being potential
consumers of your product. For example, if
you are selling bicycles, important
keywords would be, ‘bike,’ ‘bicycles,’ ‘for
sale’ etc. On the other hand, negative
keywords are programmed to achieve the
opposite.
Negative Keywords:
What Are They?
A negative keyword is a type of keyword that
blocks ads from being triggered by a certain word
or phrase. That way, these ads won’t be shown to
anyone searching using that phrase. For example
adding ‘cheap’ as a negative keyword blocks the
ad from appearing under any search that uses the
term ‘cheap’ such as ‘cheap bicycles for sale.’ In
return, this would conserve a lot of ad spending
and repel unwanted traffic on the page.
The benefits of negative keywords are mostly
utilized by advertising agencies aiming to eliminate
the number of uninterested buyers from accessing
their pages. Many businesses search for the ideal
keywords that would result in the highest number
of clicks and the most views. Yet, not many
agencies exert much effort in identifying the
negative keywords that would help them reach the
same objective.

AdWords
AdWords (Google Ads) is an advertising program created
by Google for businesses aiming to display ads on Google
and its advertising network. The service allows businesses
to set a budget for advertising and only pay when people
click the ads (this is referred to as a PPC service); hence
this techniques heavily focuses on the uses of keywords
and negative keywords. For that reason, identifying relevant
and irrelevant (negative) keywords is important in saving the
most amount of money.
