NEGOTIATION SKILLS

INTRODUCTION
• The word Negotiation is derived from Latin word ‘neg’(not)+ ‘otium’(leisure) i.e.
not a ‘leisure ’or simply ‘business’.
• It is a communication and problem solving process built on a broad foundation of
skills and knowledge.
• It is also one of the most popular and effective means of resolving conflicts and
misunderstandings.
• So what exactly negotiation means-
• It means to confer another or others in order to come to terms or reach an
agreement.
• Mutual discussion and arrangements of the terms of reach an agreement.
• To settle by discussion and bargaining
DEFINITION
• Negotiation is a process where two parties with differences which they need
to resolve are trying to reach agreement through exploring for options and
exchanging offers and an agreement.
• Firstly , negotiation is a process- a sequence of activities perhaps with an
underlying pattern. It is not a single event-choices are made along the way.it
is not mechanical and deterministic-the choices negotiator makes affect how
the agreement will be achieved and what the agreement will be.
• Secondly , we need two parties for a negotiation.
• Thirdly , there must be differences. If there are no differences there is no
need to negotiate and because there are differences we can expect some
conflict and competition.
