The nervous system is comprised of the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS includes the brain and spinal cord and controls sensory input, data integration, and motor output. The PNS is made up of nerves that connect the CNS to receptors throughout the body. Neurons are specialized cells that transmit signals via electrical and chemical processes. They have a cell body, dendrites that receive signals, and an axon that transmits signals. Excitatory neurons increase activity in target cells while inhibitory neurons decrease activity. The balance of excitation and inhibition determines whether a signal is transmitted.
