- 3. Definition Net Neutrality is the simple concept that no sites should have importance of other sites, and the fact that people should view only what they intend to view.
- 4. The Debate Many argue that when they go to the internet they should see only what they intend to see. Unlike the real world, the internet should be a resource free from billboards, advertisements, and gimics.
- 5. The Debate (cont.) Others aruge if a company wants to pay to have an advertisement up, they have the right to do so. It’s the old “survival of the fittest,” and let the man who pays more get the better advertising debate. People in favor of this say that if a host cant pay for the web space, an advertisement can make the money to have the site up for free. Many people pay for web space though these advertisements. These arguments are futile.
- 6. Internet Providers Internet providers should not be able to control what you look at on the web. When you pay your cell phone bill, the company does not tell you who you can or can’t call. This same principle needs to apply to the internet as well.
- 7. Our Government It seems our government is looking over its shoulder on this one. The House of Representatives passed its telecommunications bill in May, without adequate net neutrality protections. Soon this will be a real problem, which can’t be over looked.

Our Justice Department views in opposition to the idea of Net Neutrality and feels the idea that Internet service providers should be allowed to charge a fee for priority Web traffic. If one company starts to take over, the government wont be able to look over this subject any more, especially should a monopoly form because of it.

The Wall Street Journal The wall street in may of 2006 stated in their article Should net be neutral , “ The "net neutrality" debate has reached a fever pitch as Congress mulls legislation that would allow Internet service providers to charge Web sites for preferred delivery of digital content.” This goes to show how money speaks. If there is a profit to be made, someone will make it.
- 10. Conclusion Net neutrality is a heated debate, and is showing no signs of cooling any time soon. This is a real problem we will have to deal with. The government has over looked the debate as of now, but in the future may not be let off the hook so easily. For information – Winona
