Use of Technology Accountants use computers every day. They have accounting and auditing programs that they need to do the work
Working in Teams As an accountant you work in groups very often. There are usually a group of people all doing different things to complete one major project. You need to be able to compromise with other team members and be able to listen to them and speak to them.
Listening To be a good accountant you need to be able to listen to your clients if you are a public accountant. If a management accountant then you need to be able to listen to the other people you are working with.
Communications You need to be able to speak and write well. When working in groups as a management accountant you will need to write up reports and explain the report to the group.
Time Management A lot of the time public accountants are working on many projects at once. They can be helping someone with an audit and filing someone's taxes at the same time. It is important to be able to manage your time as to when you do what.
About Accountants Accountants help to ensure that firms are run efficiently, public records kept accurately, and taxes paid properly and on time. They analyze financial information for companies, businesses, individual clients, and Federal, State, and local governments. They also provide information to their clients by preparing, analyzing, and verifying financial documents. They also offer advice on budget analysis, financial and investment planning, information technology consulting, and limited legal services. Public accountants deal with individual clients or small businesses and management accountants deal with big businesses. Management accountants usually work with a team to complete their tasks, while public accountants usually work by themselves.  
Job Outlook Accountants are expected to experience much faster than average employment growth from 2008-18. Job opportunities should be favorable; accountants and auditors who have a professional certification, especially CPAs, should have the best prospects. As the economy grows, the number of business establishments will increase, requiring more accountants to set up books, prepare taxes, and give advice. An increased need for accountants also will arise from a greater emphasis on accountability, transparency, and controls in financial reporting.
Projections Median annual wages of wage and salary accountants and auditors were $59,430 in May 2008. The middle half of the occupation earned between $45,900 and $78,210. The bottom 10 percent earned less than $36,720, and the top 10 percent earned more than $102,380. Median annual wages in the industries employing the largest numbers of accountants and auditors were as follows:
Professional Organization American Institute of Certified Public Accountants:  Becoming a CPA shows Prestige, Respect, and Reputation. It is a highly sought after position. Experienced CPA’s also make from $80,000-$120,000
Educational Route To become an accountant at least a bachelor’s degree in accounting is required. A lot of internships helps to obtain a job. After getting a job many people choose to try and become a CPA.
Related Careers Auditors : Many accountants do auditing work and the jobs are similar. Requires the same kinds of skills. Budget Analysts : Budgets Analysts tell people how money should be spent with the amount of money they have. It relates to money and math like accounting does. Cost Estimators : Cost Estimators also deal with money and math.
Shadowing Questions Q: What hours do you work? Is there a lot of overtime? A: “The hours can be very demanding based on the month. During certain months there is a lot of work. There is as much overtime as necessary to finish the work. Weekends and nights are common to work on.” Q: Is there a lot of travel? A: “Aside from traveling to the office, there is a lot of travel. Many times you have to go to clients houses, and they can live very far away.
