New PCs slideshow
Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is proud
to roll out its next generation of public
computers this summer.

These computers are faster and more
reliable, and they offer a greater
range of tools and software. We
believe that they will help improve
your library experience .

This slideshow will introduce you to
some of the new features.
Improved Web Browsing
We heard your requests and
added Mozilla’s Firefox
browser. We also updated
Internet Explorer and
improved search, browser
and toolbar settings.
Save Temporary Files
Now you can save the files you create
and download to the temporary (T:)
drive, which you can find by launching
the Computer icon.

(NOTE: The T: drive is erased at the end of your
session, but you can attach the files you save
there to an email or upload them to the cloud
for later retrieval. Bringing your own flash drive
to the library is still recommended.)
New Programs
The new computers feature several
new software applications under the
Programs icon, including the latest
version of the Microsoft Office suite
and, for the first time, multimedia
creation and editing software.
Microsoft Office 2010
The new computers offer Office 2010, the
current version of Microsoft’s productivity
suite, which includes Access, Excel,
PowerPoint, Publisher and Word.

(Click on any of the links above to find
tutorials and more information about
these programs.)
Multimedia Software
The new computers also feature new creativity
and editing software, including:
•Audacity, an audio recording and editing
program.
•GIMP 2, an image manipulation program.
•Windows Live Movie Maker, a video creation
and editing program.
•You can also burn DVDs with Windows DVD
Maker.
Multiple Media Players
You now have several options for playing
audio or video files, including Windows
Media Player and the open source VLC
media player.

Using Overdrive Media and Adobe Digital
Editions, you can even transfer eBook or
other digital titles onto your eReader or
portable device.
New Accessibility Tools
Windows 7 is Microsoft’s most accessible operating system
yet. Some of the accessibility tools include:
•Magnify: Zooms in on the screen to make text and objects easier to
see.
•On-Screen Keyboard: Displays standard keys on the monitor, so you
can “type” with a mouse or other pointing device.
•Narrator: Reads on-screen text aloud and describes some events that
happen while you're using the computer.
•Speech Recognition: Enables you to interact with your computer
using only your voice.
