You’ve probably met Dr.
Tonarely at the Ponce de Leon
Animal Clinic for an appoint-
ment. What you might not
know is that he is also the
owner and has been practicing
at this location since 1994.
  Tonarely grew up in Cuba
where his family raised cat-
tle. This is where he realized
he had a special
love for animals.
In 1960, Tonare-
ly moved to the
United Sates.
  “My roots in
Cuba motivated
me to get a BS
in Dairy Science
at Kansas State
University,” says
Tonarely. Afterwards he at-
tended Cornell School of Vet-
erinary Medicine and became
a member of the American
Veterinary Association.
  In 1993, Tonarely decid-
ed to move to Miami, and he
opened his animal clinic the
following year.
  While living here, Tonarely
met his wife and had a family,
including three dogs, Sandy,
Petunia and a rescue, Madi-
son. They also have three cats,
Monita, Jorge and Oliver.
  Through his daughter’s
volleyball team, Tonarely met
the Beverly’s, who helped
start the club, UPUP, at the
University of Miami. The club
trains a service dog named
Trenton on campus, who will
be donated to someone in
need. Tonarely loved the idea
and volunteered
his services for the
dog.
Dr. Tonarely has
also had interns
from the Universi-
ty who are able to
learn and watch the
veterinarian during
appointments and
procedures.
“We are here to do our ut-
most best for all our patients
and clients, while always
remembering how lucky we
are to have chosen such a
wonderful profession. I ac-
tially awaken every morning
itching to get to work”, says
Tonarely.
Dr. Tonarely and his staff at
Ponce de Leon Animal Clinic
love what they do, and are ex-
cited to do whatever they can
for your furry friend.

NATIONAL PET FIRST AID AWARENESS MONTH
Lately it seems there is a
national month for everything.
Most people don’t give pet first
aid much thought until an
emergency happens to their
own dogs or cats.
This month is about teach-
ing pet owners how to best
respond and care for their
animals in case of a medical
emergency.
Dogs and cats are surrounded
by many hazards that could
potentially lead to chok-
ing, drowning or poisoning.
Reactions to these events can
be the difference between
recovery and death, especially
if there is no time to make it to
the local veterinarian.
Owners can sign up for
training courses with their
local Red Cross or humane
organization, or they can buy
pet first aid guide books.
It is always smart to be
prepared, so we encourage
you to create a first aid kit for
the four-legged member of
your family. It’s better to be
safe than sorry!
