GLOSSARY AND DEFINITIONS (1/2)
• Accommodation is the measurement of muscle tension used to adjust the focal length of eyes. In other words, it measures
how much the eye muscle forces the eyes’ lenses to change shape to obtain a focused image of a specific 3D object in the
scene, in order to focus the eyes on the 3D object and to perceive its 3D depth.
• Convergence is a measurement of the angular difference between the viewing directions of a viewer’s two eyes when they
look at the same fixation point on a 3D object simultaneously. Based on the triangulation principle, the closer the object, the
more the eyes must converge.
• Motion parallax offers depth cues by comparing the relative motion of different elements in a 3D scene. When a viewer’s
head moves, closer 3D objects appear to move faster than those far away from the viewer.
• Binocular disparity refers to differences in images acquired by the left eye and the right eye. The farther away a 3D object
is, the farther apart are the two images.
• Linear perspective is the appearance of relative distance among 3D objects, such as the illusion of railroad tracks
converging at a distant point on the horizon.
• Occlusion is the invisible parts of objects behind an opaque object. The human brain interprets partially occluded objects as
lying farther away than interposing ones.
• Shading cast by one object upon another gives strong 3D spatial relationship clues. Variations in intensity help the human
brain to infer the surface shape and orientation of an object.
• Texture refers to the small-scale structures on an object’s surface that can be used to infer the 3D shape of the object as
well as its distance from the viewer.
• Prior knowledge of familiar sizes and the shapes of common structures that can be used to infer their 3D shapes and
distance from the viewer.

INTRODUCTION
3D coming back to the forefront: the data context
3D data is
becoming more
and more
available via
sensing for the
consumer and
the automotive.
Displaying this
data shall be of
interest.
• The 3D data trend has mainly existed in the military sector or the medical sector. As they were low volume high
value systems, these were specific market considerations.
• With the rise in popularity of other markets like the automotive (LiDAR) or the consumer (3D sensing on the front
side for smartphones), there is a huge amount of available data that could be processed and displayed to enhance
user experience via immersion and interactivity.

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS
Flat panel displays – The push toward 8K
8K is coming
but there is
little
differentiation
at regular
viewing
distances. 8K
seems overkill
for typical FOV
recommen-
dations.
• 3D display makers are very much looking forward the
natural increase in resolution that can be seen in panel
manufacturing. Evidently, the higher the number of
available pixels, the higher the resolution of the final
image could be with an increased number of views.
• However, as 8K TVs are entering the market, there is a
questionable interest from the public. The added value
is not striking due to size, viewing distance and field of
view requirements.
• For maximum visual comfort and experience, the
Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers and
the “THX standard” recommend FOVs of 30° and 40°
respectively.
• From these recommendations, one can derive the
optimum viewing distance for various display sizes
(below). Sitting closer means increasing the FOV:

In other words, it measures how much the eye muscle forces the eyes’ lenses to change shape to obtain a focused image of a specific 3D object in the scene, in order to focus the eyes on the 3D object and to perceive its 3D depth. • Convergence is a measurement of the angular difference between the viewing directions of a viewer’s two eyes when they look at the same fixation point on a 3D object simultaneously. Based on the triangulation principle, the closer the object, the more the eyes must converge. • Motion parallax offers depth cues by comparing the relative motion of different elements in a 3D scene. When a viewer’s head moves, closer 3D objects appear to move faster than those far away from the viewer. • Binocular disparity refers to differences in images acquired by the left eye and the right eye. The farther away a 3D object is, the farther apart are the two images. • Linear perspective is the appearance of relative distance among 3D objects, such as the illusion of railroad tracks converging at a distant point on the horizon. • Occlusion is the invisible parts of objects behind an opaque object. The human brain interprets partially occluded objects as lying farther away than interposing ones. • Shading cast by one object upon another gives strong 3D spatial relationship clues. Variations in intensity help the human brain to infer the surface shape and orientation of an object. • Texture refers to the small-scale structures on an object’s surface that can be used to infer the 3D shape of the object as well as its distance from the viewer. • Prior knowledge of familiar sizes and the shapes of common structures that can be used to infer their 3D shapes and distance from the viewer.

Displaying this data shall be of interest. • The 3D data trend has mainly existed in the military sector or the medical sector. As they were low volume high value systems, these were specific market considerations. • With the rise in popularity of other markets like the automotive (LiDAR) or the consumer (3D sensing on the front side for smartphones), there is a huge amount of available data that could be processed and displayed to enhance user experience via immersion and interactivity. 3D displays Military Medical New driver: automotive New driver: consumer Source: US Navy Source: 3DIcon
  • 15. Next Generation 3D Displays 2019 | Sample | www.yole.fr | ©2019 15 TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS Flat panel displays – The push toward 8K 8K is coming but there is little differentiation at regular viewing distances. 8K seems overkill for typical FOV recommen- dations. • 3D display makers are very much looking forward the natural increase in resolution that can be seen in panel manufacturing. Evidently, the higher the number of available pixels, the higher the resolution of the final image could be with an increased number of views. • However, as 8K TVs are entering the market, there is a questionable interest from the public. The added value is not striking due to size, viewing distance and field of view requirements. • For maximum visual comfort and experience, the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers and the “THX standard” recommend FOVs of 30° and 40° respectively. • From these recommendations, one can derive the optimum viewing distance for various display sizes (below). Sitting closer means increasing the FOV: SMTP: 30° FOV THX: 40° FOV 50° FOV 55“ (140 cm) Xx m Xx m Xx m 65“ (165 cm) Xx m Xx m Xx m 75“ (190 cm) Xx m Xx m Xx m 85“ (216 cm) Xx m Xx m Xx m Panel Size Viewing distance Field Of View
