This study evaluated changes in the Bispectral Index (BIS) during target controlled infusion (TCI) anesthesia with propofol in 54 patients. BIS, plasma concentration (Cp), and other vital signs were monitored during induction and maintenance of anesthesia. Results showed quick loss of consciousness at a mean Cp of 1.42 mcg/ml and BIS of 63.66. Lower induction doses of propofol were required compared to previous studies. BIS values between 40-60 during maintenance correlated with stable hemodynamics and a reduced risk of awareness.
