ABOUT ▸ NITI Aayog is a Government of India policy think-tank. ▸ • The acronym ‘NITI’ stands for National Institution for Transforming India. ▸ • ‘Aayog ’is the Hindi word for ‘commission’. ▸ • Established by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. ▸ • Formation – 1st January 2015, ▸ First meeting - 8th February 2015 4

- 6. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NITI AAYOG & PLANNING COMMISION. ▸ Financial Clout ▸ Full-time members ▸ States’ Role ▸ Member Secretary. NITI AAYOG 1. To be an advisory body, or a think-tank. The powers to allocate funds might be vested in the finance ministry. 2. The number of full-time members could be fewer than Planning Commission. 3. State governments are expected to play a more significant role than they did in the Planning Commission. 4. To be known at the CEO and to be appointed by the prime minister. PLANNING COMMISSION 1. Enjoyed the powers to allocate funds to ministries and state governments. 2. The last Commission had eight full-time members. 3. States' role was limited to the National Development Council and annual interaction during Plan meetings. 4. Secretaries or member secretaries we appointment through the usual process. 6

- 9. Conclusion: NITI Aayog will seek to facilitate and empowerthis critical requirement of good governance, which is people-centric, participative, collaborative, transparent and policy-driven. It will provide critical directional and strategic input to the development process, focus on deliverables and outcomes. This, along with being as incubator and disseminator of fresh thought and ideas for development, will be the core mission of NITI Aayog. 9
