Non Verbal Communication
Have you ever heard
anyone say, "His actions
spoke so loudly I couldn't
  hear what he said?"
Non-verbal    communication      includes    facial
expressions, eye contact, tone of voice, body
posture and motions, volume, word choice &
syntax and positioning within groups. It may also
include the way we wear our clothes or the silence
we keep.
Categories
     The different
     categories covered
     are:
      Signs
      Symbols
      Physical aspects
Signs
Sometimes considered symbolic by the
receivers
 Smile- A symbol of happiness
 Cry –A symbol of sadness and sometimes
  happiness
 Frown-A symbol of displeasure
Symbols
    Subset of signs ,with
    great meaning
    and depth.
     Religious and
      cultural symbols
     Patriotic Symbols
     Humanitarian
      Symbols
• Symbolic-Use of religious, status, or ego-building
  symbols.
• Includes jewellery, tatoos, cars, clothing and other
  things to communicate social status, financial means,
  influence or religion.

              and fitting
            • Avoid pattern

worthy only to use on dogs

    Gestures play a very
    important role in
    conveying thoughts
    or messages like
    Winston Churchill’s
    famous V (signifying
    victory)soon after
    World War I.
Postures
•Way we hold ourselves,
the way we stand or sit
•Indicates something about
feelings or thoughts ,
attitudes and health.
•Graceful postures is a
great asset in any business.
Facial Expressions
• Face is the index
  of Mind
• The eyes, the
  lips and the
  muscles express
  many feelings
• It can also be
  deceived by
  manipulation
oOlfactics
     • Study     of    the
       influence of smell
       on communication
       behavior
     • Various odor and
       fragrances convey
       the emotions of the
       sender and affect
       the reaction of the
       receiver.
Haptics
 It refers to the sense of
  touch
 Touching people can
  communicate friendship ,
  love , approval , hatred
  and anger
 A kiss on the cheek , a
  pat on the shoulder , and
  slap on the back is
  prompted by various
  emotions
Haptics
 Culturally determined and each culture
  has a clear concept of what parts of the
  body one may not touch
 For eg.----- In Western culture handshake
  is common even for strangers , hugs ,
  kisses for those of opposite genders or of
  family on an increasingly more intimate
  basis
         -----Africans touch on greeting but
  are annoyed if touched on the head.
Paralanguage
The non verbal aspects of the spoken word
It includes
• Voice – Tone , Volume and Pitch
• Speed – rapid speech indicates
   excitement
We increase the speed of speaking to tell an
   interesting story and reduce speed to
   explain a difficult idea.
Proxemics
 The non verbal study of
  time and space
 Different for people of
  different descent
 Takes into account body
  spacing and postures as
  involuntary reactions to
  sensory fluctuations
