Tenses are word that show the time of an
action, an event, or a situation.
Tenses are used to show whether the
action is happening at that time, is
completed or is habitual.
TENSES
Present Tense
Past Tense
Future Tense
The Simple Present Tense is used
to:
 Give a fact or some information which is
true at the time of speaking.
 To show a repeated or habitual action.
 To express a fact or information which is
true all the time.
• Important!
 When we use I, you, we, they or plural
nouns, we do not add ‘s’ or ‘es’ to the action
verb.
 For non-action verb or ‘be’ verb, we say
 ( I) am….
 (he/she/it ) is….
 (you, we, they) are……
Simple Present tense is used to
show a truth or a fact.
Examples:
1.The sun rises in the east.
2.Tigers and lions eat meat.
3.A butcher is a person who sells
meat.
4.The earth moves round the sun.
Simple Present Tense is also used for
actions which are done habitually or
which happen regularly. Some of the
keywords which are often used in such
sentences are:
 Every day
 Always
 Often
 Sometimes
 Usually
 Never
 Seldom
 Normally
Examples:
1.Father drinks coffee every
morning.
2.Those girls always write neatly.
3.My cat never plays in that dirty
place.
4.Does she come here often?
Simple Present Tense is also used to give
orders or instructions.
Examples:
1. Please help me to carry this big box.
2. I am thirsty. Get me a glass of orange
juice.
3. The boy is very ill. Send him to the
hospital immediately.
 Affirmative (positive) = asserting that something is
true or valid
S (subject) + Be
S (subject) + Base verb
Be verb: am, is, are
 Negative = a reply denying something
S (subject) + Be verb + not
S (subject) + do/does + not+ base verb
 Interrogative = asking a question
Be + S (subject)
Do/Does + S + Base verb
Example:
Rule 1
All singular nouns must be followed by
verbs ending in ‘s’ or ‘es’.
Examples:
1. Ali goes to school every day.
2. A plant needs water, air and sunlight.
3. Rain comes from clouds.
Rule 2
 All plural nouns must be followed by
root words. They do not need ‘s’ or ‘es’
to be added to them.
Examples:
1. The boys go to school every day.
2. Plants need water, air and sunlight.
3. Azizah and Melissa do not cycle to
school every day.
Rule 3

must be root words.
Examples:
1.Close your eyes and count to ten.
2.Go and play with your friend in the
garden.
3.Write neatly and check before you hand
in.

singular nouns. This means they must
be followed by verbs ending in ‘s’ or ‘es’.
