This paper analyzes data on careers of doctorate holders from the second international data collection conducted in 2010. It finds that the number of doctoral degrees awarded across OECD countries has risen 38% from 2000 to 2009. While doctorates make up a small share of the population, countries like Switzerland have over 2.8% of their workforce holding doctorates. The paper examines trends in the labor market outcomes, earnings, mobility, and career satisfaction of doctorate holders. It finds that employment rates remain high but temporary positions are rising in academia. Demand exists across many sectors, with natural scientists more likely to work in research and social scientists in other fields.
