Odonates, or dragonflies and damselflies, are aquatic insects that have existed for over 250 million years. With over 500 known species in India, they help control pests like mosquitoes and protect crops by preying on gnats, midges, and mosquito larvae. They can best be observed near freshwater ponds and rivers during the monsoon season from May to November, especially around midday while wearing dull colored clothes.

As they feed on Gnats, Midges, mosquito larvae & other pests they can be used to control dengue, malaria and protect the crops. They can be observed during monsoons (May-November) near fresh water ponds & rivers. Mid-day is the best time to watch them. When photographing them wear dull clothes. They are a very good indicator of the health of a wetland. They require more detailed study.
