Term 2
Our focus: Exploring global poverty via
Fair Trade


• Countries in the wealthy ‘North’ include
NZ, Australia, North America and Europe.
• Countries in the poorer ‘South’ include
South America, Africa, India and China.


The “Cookie Game”
• This is an activity we
played in class with
chocolate biscuits.
Today we will use
coins.
• This game highlights
how unfairly the
World’s wealth is
shared.


50% of this wealth stays with 20% of the people
50% of this wealth is shared amongst 80% of the people

•21% of the world’s population 12.5 cookies for 1 pupil

•84% of the world’s wealth

•79% of the world’s population 4 cookies for 4 pupils
1 cookies for 20 pupils
•16% of the world’s wealth
80% of this wealth stays with 20% of the people
20% of this wealth is shared amongst 80% of the people

Term Three
Types of problems we face
• Bullying [cyber, school, etc]
• Trying to fit in
• Relationships
• Anti social behaviour
• Low self-esteem
• Lack of confidence or self
belief


Our solution

Create a student code of ethics
[designed by students for students] that
will encourage the right types of
behaviour and actions in Somerville
students. This code of ethics will have
a huge impact in our school and will go
along way to solve the day to day
problems some of us face.

Why ethics

Ethics are woven into everything we do.
In any given moment we are either
acting ethically or unethically. Ethics
are like virtues/morals in that they
define how we live our lives and can
powerfully impact the lives of those
around us.


What are ethics?
Ethics are related to human action.
They define what is right and wrong.
Ethics seek to define good behaviour
and what should be valued.


The difference between laws
and ethics
Laws are written, approved and enforced by
the government. They are clear and usually
logical.

Ethics are like rules of conduct. They are
actions closely related to morals and virtues
that society believes it should have. Break an
ethic and you will likely face disapproval from
your peers, family and/or the community.


Cyber Safety
Part of our solution to
some of the dangers
we face in an
increasingly cyber
world was to create a
series of educational
videos aimed at
keeping ourselves safe
online.


We will now separate
into our classes and
return in the hall in
30 mins.
