EXPLANATION OF TRANSCRIPTS
Wichita State University (WSU) was founded as Fairmount College in 1895, and was operated by the Congregational Church until 1926, when it
became the Municipal University of Wichita. It officially entered the state system of higher education in I 964. Wichita State is accredited by the
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; specific programs also are accredited by professional organizations.
II. Each calendar year consists of two semesters and one summer session. A ‘credit hour’ is a measure of graduate or undergraduate academic
work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that reasonably approximates one hour of
classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for each week of instructional time for approximately
fifteen weeks for one semester, or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.
III. All courses in which the student was still enrolled after the first week of the semester are listed. Transfer work is listed by institution with only
total hours accepted and the grade point average for those hours. Acceptance of credit does not necessarily mean that it counts toward a
student’s degree program at WSU.
IV.GRADING SYSTEM
A = Excellent (Distinguished Achievement) W or WD = Withdrawn
B Good (Superior Achievement) AU = Audit
C = Satisfactory (Average Achievement) NGR = No grade submitted
D Unsatisfactory (Below Average Achievement) CRE = Credit by examination or by credentials
F or WF = Failure or Withdrawn Failing p In-Progress; completion not required in one semester
P = Passing work (B, C, or D); credit given, no grade points i = Incomplete
CR Credit (A, B, or C); credit given; no grade points
NCR =
No credit (D or F); no credit given; no grade points BG = Badge(A, B, or C); credit given; no grade points
(does not necessarily imply failure) NBG No Badge (D or F); no credit given; no grade points
S = Satisfactory(A, B, or C); credit given; no grade points (does not necessarily imply failure)
U = Unsaisfactory(D or F); no credit given; no grade points
P, CRE, CR, and S hours (earned hours without grade points) do not count in computation of Grade Point Average (GPA) but are included with
overall hours earned. Plus/minus grading began Fall 2009 - see ‘Grade Points’ below.
ACADEMIC STANDING: Academic Probation, Probation Continued, Academic Dismissal - reflects the academic regulations and standards of the
institution.
V. GRADE POINTS and GRADE POINT AVERAGE: Grade points are assigned for each hour of work according to the grade attained as follows:
A = 4.000 points B+ 3.300 points C+ = 2.300 points D+ = 1 .300 points F = 0 points
A- = 3.700 points B 3.000 points C 2.000 points D = 1.000 point AU, I, IP, W, WD, WF, CRE, CR, NCR, 5, U, P = no points
B- = 2.700 points C- = I .700 points D- = 0.700 point
The GPA is computed by dividing the total number of credit points by the total number of semester hours completed for which regular letter grades
(A, B, C, D, F) are assigned. GPA’s are calculated and applied to three decimal places (truncated) although only two decimal places print on the transcript.
Plus/minus grading began Fall 2009.
VI. Z GRADES AND REPEATS: Any hours where the grade is preceded by a ‘Z’ do not count, either in computing the GPA or otherwise. Some ‘Z’
hours are a result of our repeat policy, which has changed several times over the years.
REMARKS (R) COLUMN CODING - USUALLY FOR REPEATED COURSES:
E = This grade and hours are excluded from GPA calculations and earned hours.
I = This grade and hours are included in GPA calculations and earned hours.
A = This grade and hours are included in GPA calculations but not in earned hours.
VII. TOTALS: Three sets of totals are listed at the end of each record: WSU, Transfer, and Overall. Totals for graduate students include only hours and
grade points from graduate credit courses.
VIII.UNDERGRADUATE HONORS
Semester: Dean’s List: Students enrolled in 12 or more hours of graded work who achieve a 3.500 or higher GPA (began Spring 1980).
Academic Commendation: Students enrolled in 6-1 1 hours of graded work who achieve a 3.500 or higher GPA (began Fall 1988).
Graduation: Degrees are conferred with distinction based upon the student achieving the minimum standard in both the overall and WSU grade
point averages: Cum Laude: 3.250-3.549 Magna Cum Laude: 3.550-3.899 Summa Cum Laude: 3.900-4.000

  • 3. EXPLANATION OF TRANSCRIPTS Wichita State University (WSU) was founded as Fairmount College in 1895, and was operated by the Congregational Church until 1926, when it became the Municipal University of Wichita. It officially entered the state system of higher education in I 964. Wichita State is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; specific programs also are accredited by professional organizations. II. Each calendar year consists of two semesters and one summer session. A ‘credit hour’ is a measure of graduate or undergraduate academic work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that reasonably approximates one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for each week of instructional time for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester, or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. III. All courses in which the student was still enrolled after the first week of the semester are listed. Transfer work is listed by institution with only total hours accepted and the grade point average for those hours. Acceptance of credit does not necessarily mean that it counts toward a student’s degree program at WSU. IV.GRADING SYSTEM A = Excellent (Distinguished Achievement) W or WD = Withdrawn B Good (Superior Achievement) AU = Audit C = Satisfactory (Average Achievement) NGR = No grade submitted D Unsatisfactory (Below Average Achievement) CRE = Credit by examination or by credentials F or WF = Failure or Withdrawn Failing p In-Progress; completion not required in one semester P = Passing work (B, C, or D); credit given, no grade points i = Incomplete CR Credit (A, B, or C); credit given; no grade points NCR = No credit (D or F); no credit given; no grade points BG = Badge(A, B, or C); credit given; no grade points (does not necessarily imply failure) NBG No Badge (D or F); no credit given; no grade points S = Satisfactory(A, B, or C); credit given; no grade points (does not necessarily imply failure) U = Unsaisfactory(D or F); no credit given; no grade points P, CRE, CR, and S hours (earned hours without grade points) do not count in computation of Grade Point Average (GPA) but are included with overall hours earned. Plus/minus grading began Fall 2009 - see ‘Grade Points’ below. ACADEMIC STANDING: Academic Probation, Probation Continued, Academic Dismissal - reflects the academic regulations and standards of the institution. V. GRADE POINTS and GRADE POINT AVERAGE: Grade points are assigned for each hour of work according to the grade attained as follows: A = 4.000 points B+ 3.300 points C+ = 2.300 points D+ = 1 .300 points F = 0 points A- = 3.700 points B 3.000 points C 2.000 points D = 1.000 point AU, I, IP, W, WD, WF, CRE, CR, NCR, 5, U, P = no points B- = 2.700 points C- = I .700 points D- = 0.700 point The GPA is computed by dividing the total number of credit points by the total number of semester hours completed for which regular letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) are assigned. Some ‘Z’ hours are a result of our repeat policy, which has changed several times over the years. REMARKS (R) COLUMN CODING - USUALLY FOR REPEATED COURSES: E = This grade and hours are excluded from GPA calculations and earned hours. I = This grade and hours are included in GPA calculations and earned hours. A = This grade and hours are included in GPA calculations but not in earned hours. VII. TOTALS: Three sets of totals are listed at the end of each record: WSU, Transfer, and Overall. Totals for graduate students include only hours and grade points from graduate credit courses. VIII.UNDERGRADUATE HONORS Semester: Dean’s List: Students enrolled in 12 or more hours of graded work who achieve a 3.500 or higher GPA (began Spring 1980). Academic Commendation: Students enrolled in 6-1 1 hours of graded work who achieve a 3.500 or higher GPA (began Fall 1988). Graduation: Degrees are conferred with distinction based upon the student achieving the minimum standard in both the overall and WSU grade point averages: Cum Laude: 3.250-3.549 Magna Cum Laude: 3.550-3.899 Summa Cum Laude: 3.900-4.000 Ix.
