Matthew Letterman served in the Persian Gulf War from 1990 to 1991 as a member of the 1st Armored Division stationed in Germany. He described the desert combat experience as being like surviving on the moon's surface. Upon returning home, Letterman experienced worsening health problems and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. He believes his illnesses were caused by exposure to chemical and biological agents, smoke from oil well fires, and vaccines during deployment. Seventeen years later, Letterman continues to suffer from various health issues and was denied disability benefits by the VA.
